      Hey Folks,

New poster, I have an older computer I have used for my firewall for about six
years. I am having some hardware related issues with it and want to replace it
      with newer hardware.

My question is what is a is a reasonable "Consumer Grade" motherboard to use.
This firewall is located in my home and is used with a 400MBS feed from my
internet provider. I have three "Intel" Pci Network cards that I will continue
to use. I have it setup as a "Wan" "Lan" "Opt1". I am sure it will have to be a
full size ATX board for the expansion slots. I prefer AMD processors, as the
price is reasonable for the performance I require.

What is everyone using these days. Really looking for a tried and true
combination of "Motherboard and Video Card" that just works.

      Thanks

Just firewall and router at 400Mbps does not require much processing power at all.

        Are you running packages? VPNs?

What is your existing CPU? How loaded is it?

I would look at a multi port NIC or a board with muliple NICs on it rather than a board with loat of slots.

          @stephenw10
Thanks for the reply, I have no "vpn" no "packages" and only 21 lines in the firewall ruleset.
The cpu utilization is 1% or lower at all times.

I am looking at the "Protectli" 4 port appliance any thoughts?

          Thanks

            Well I'm biased. 😉

I would use our 4100 there and that would give plenty of headroom. The 2100 would also pass 400Mbps but you would start to see the hardware limits if you added hungry packages or VPNs.

But what CPU is that currently? It's clearly over specced whatever it is.

I use an older Dell 3020 in my home network. 2 family members work from home. I have a Dell 390 that works great too except it can’t handle i7’s.

I wanted something with enough PCI-e slots I didn’t have to run a switch right away.
