Whats the best way to upgrade from Pfsense 2.4.5.1p1 to the most current version?

Whats the best way to upgrade from Pfsense CE 2.4.5.1p1 to the most current version? We are using a Netgear Netgate 1541 - the only options its being presented is to upgrade to 23.01 or 22.05. See attached.
However, everything I have read reads that I need CE 2.6 in order to upgrade to these editions. No CE version is available on the dropdown. Thoughts?
Thank you. B

@bcrespi If you have Netgate hardware you probably have Factory Edition unless you reinstalled using CE. The numbering was the same.
Plus is essentially the new name for FE, with more feature divergence over time.
Check the upgrade guide and version notes at https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/upgrade-guide.html
Netgate usually suggests reinstalling if the version is really old.

That will also get you ZFS.If you want to try, I’d have the install image handy or some alternate way to get it. Then I would set the upgrade branch to Previous Stable and upgrade to that first. Then 23.01.

Hi Steve, this is super helpful. Im just formulating the migration plan and will follow up if I need those images. Thank you so much for your valuable feedback!
best,

Yes, you are seeing the correct versions offered for that hardware.
You should be able to upgrade directly to 23.01 from there but it's a big jump. Far fewer systems will have tested that so I would have the 23.01 install media on hand just in case. Always a good idea to have it anyway.

As @stephenw10 pointed out you may want to have the images in advance.

I have a Netgate SG3100, also on 2.4.5-p1
Running packages:
pfBlockerNG-devel 2.2.5_34
sysutils NUT 2.7.4_7 (APCpro550 / Synology combo)I'm not encouraged by these update fails:
a. where to get the 23.01 install image?
b. ...to put on what: a USB chip I guess?
c. is it worthwhile trying a "dumb" upgrade as-is?
d: is it worthwhile uninstalling both packages and trying a "slightly less dumb" upgrade?Yes, I have other routes to internet (a "guest-net" outside the SG3100 plus a 4G TP-Link WiFi thing), but that would be disruption I prefer to avoid.
I really REALLY don't want to lose my SG3100 config (VLANS etc).

I would say it is worth trying removing packages and then upgrading directly. But you should still request the 23.01 image so you can reinstall if you have to.

Thanks both!
Close to midnight here, but thanks for the super-rapid responses ...tomorrow morning I'll give it a go!
