Trade-In Program?

Netgate,
It would be great if you offered some sort of trade-in program for those of us looking to upgrade current generation firewall appliances - kind of like what Apple does with iPhones. Even with a current 6100 MAX still under factory warranty, I would gladly upgrade to an 8200 MAX if there was an easy path to do so as I need the extra 8GB of RAM.
I'm willing to bet you could easily create a market for "factory certified" used firewalls much like a certified used vehicle.
Just an idea.

@defenderllc Sounds nice, but your example is comparing a multi-trillion dollar company that markets to non-techies like my grandmother to Netgate that sells prosumer/enterprise devices to nerds which is a bit apples and oranges.
With that said I'd love to 'trade' my 5100 for a 6100. You could always run pfsense on your own hardware to build your ideal setup.

It's just an idea. I would think a lot of people would be willing to buy a "Netgate factory refurbished" firewall at a discount.

Not surprising considering the five year difference. But if you trade in a model that’s only a year or two old, you can get about $600+. Totally worth it if you like to stay on the cutting edge. I would be willing to take a marginal loss on my 6100 MAX for an 8200 MAX if it was a simple and convenient process. After all, both models are still current and it would just be nice if there was some sort of trade or program for current models. Again, it was just an idea. Netgate could make money on the firewall a second time and another customer could save money in the process.

@defenderllc I don't disagree with you.. Just not sure if there is enough market for netgate to be able to do that.. They would have to be sell the traded in model for something that they make a profit on.. Or atleast don't loose money on.
There is nothing wrong with that sort of business model.. Hey amazon gave me $5 for my old echo dots when traded them in for the next model ;)
Would there be enough of market for these now refurbed older models?

@defenderllc
Another significant difference between Apple and Netgate is that Netgate does not design and build hardware, making both the logistics and financial margin of it all a bit difficult to imagine.It would be a great service to see but even looking from the outside it looks challenging.

I have to agree here - I don't think netgate is making all that much margin on their hardware to be honest.. its not like they are buying the box for 100$ and selling them for 800$, at least I don't image the margin is that high ;)
Look at the lowend sg1000 and 1100 they were selling.. Do you think they were getting those for like 10 bucks each or something and then selling from for 100+ ?
Also keep in mind apple and amazon have more incentive to get as many products into the hands of customers because they make money selling other stuff.. Apple makes a killing on apps sold for example.. Can not sell apps if nothing to run the apps on. Amazon same thing - its not working out as much for them like they hoped I don't think.. But the alexa devices are suppose to be selling machines.. And these companies have Billions to invest, etc...
My sg4860 is getting a bit long in the tooth, some point here in the not too far future I will replace it - I would like nothing better to trade in and get "something" for it - maybe I can just sell it on my own? But I wouldn't hold my breath on netgate offering trade money for old devices. Now not a business guy, and don't have any insight into the finances of netgate, etc. But a trade in option seems unlikely - even if it would be nice..
Does cisco offer such a trade in? What about palo or juniper? Does Dell or Lenovo on their pcs or tablets?

I can imagine that one from Cisco - they would want your first-born at the time of trade-in with an additional reoccurring cost of your soul.

@robbiett hahah yeah so true..

So... Does anyone want to buy a 6100 MAX with 4 months of factory warranty left so I can upgrade to an 8200 MAX? :)
-
@defenderllc I got mine from a guy who was doing exactly that - a move from a 6100 to 8200.
