I've been running pfsense on Netgate appliance for close to 10 years now, my most recent upgrade was to the 6100 with pfSense+ installed on it. I've seen announcements about TNSR support for 6100 Max and wondering if TNSR will work on my regular 6100. If it will work, is it advisable to switch?

Yes, technically you can but I would recommend using an SSD if you decide to.

Really it depends how you're going to use it as to whether TNSR will be a good fit.

If you go this route and do not get an NVMe SSD for it you will burn out your eMMC storage.

If you install an NVMe drive and your 6100 is still under warranty and damage your system in the process the warranty might be void -- we do not publish instructions for adding an NVMe to this system.

So... YMMV and proceed with great caution.

It is a really simple job to fit and install to an NVMe though. Hardest part is sourcing a suitable SSD, with the right key slots, preferably without DRAM (still feels odd to write that) and ideally 256GB or below (according to the manufacturer but many of us have tested at 512GB with nothing untoward noted).

I run mine with pure 64GB of Optane, so writes will be no issue at all.

Thanks all, I've installed NVMe in other servers before. But after reading more it looks like TNSR might not be the right fit for my home network. Looks like its more geared to being an edge router rather than what I use PFsense for today. Appreciate all of the advice!

This isn't "other servers" so... be careful as you could really make the system unusable if you aren't careful.

Correct. Some of us here (myself and @stephenw10) can't even run it on our edge because it doesn't support our ISPs connection (PPPoE).
