    I've got the 'nut' package installed to monitor my "Eaton 3S 550" UPS

    Until yesterday I was running pfSense 2.6.0 with 'nut' version 2.7.4_10
    but now I've upgraded to pfSense 2.7.0 and 'nut' version 2.8.0_2

    The upgrade went flawlessly, with no warnings or error messages.

    The UPS monitoring appears to be working as expected, and the status pages correctly indicate when the UPS is running on battery or mains power,
    HOWEVER, I now no longer receive the "UPS notification" emails that warn of power loss or restoration.

    I do correctly receive other pfSense emails, such as reboots, etc, and the "Test SMTP Settings" button sends the relevant email.

    In the "UPS Settings" section, the "Enable notifications" box is ticked.

    Does anyone else have this problem ?, and I'd be grateful for any ideas on how to get this working again.

    Thanks

      @purleigh I think it’s a common issue - I have the same problem since upgrading to 23.05(.1) on my SG-2100’s

      Love the no fuss of using the official appliances :-)

        @keyser

        Add this: RUN_AS_USER root

        to upsmon.conf (in advanced setting for nut)

          @clauder THANK YOU ! - that has got the UPS notification emails working again.

          It also now makes the router's motherboard speaker 'squeak' on each UPS event, including -

          • communication with UPS lost
          • communication with UPS restored
          • UPS has switched to battery
          • UPS has switched to mains supply

          Another difference between how it was with pfSense 2.6.0 and now in 2.7.0,
          The UPS email message "Subject:" is now the same as all the other pfSense messages -

          "<pfsense.my-domain-name> - Notification"

          whereas previously the messages regarding UPS status has their subject like this -

          "UPS Notification from - <pfsense.my-domain-name>"

            @purleigh Glad to hear

            Now, I am having an issue. I am using the local USB connection, with the usbhid driver. After a while nut is loosing the connection to the UPS. After configuring, it starts Ok but after a while the connection is lost (and then I get an email every 5 minutes). Disabling and reconfiguring nut re-establishes the connection until it looses it again. I do not know the culprit and I hope (but do not see why it would) it is not related to RUN_AS_USER.

              @clauder do you have any OTHER interfaces or PPPoE session going up or down ?

              I have always had an issue (and still do), where the UPS claims to have lost or re-established communication when ANY other interface goes up or down.

              For example -

              • if I unplug the ethernet cable to my modem, I get a queue of UPS loss/established comms notifications arrive
              • from memory I think it happens if I unplug a LAN cable
              • even daft things like going to Status > Interfaces > WAN Interface - and then <Disconnect WAN> on the PPPoE, and then <Connect WAN>
              • I think I've also seen UPS communication messages, when my ISP has done an broadband line reset and the PPP session restarts

              I'll keep an eye on mine to see whether I observe any UPS comms messages that I can't associate with another interface status change

                @purleigh

                No everything is stable.

                I see that it is down now. Without the fix for the email. So it is unlikely the culprit. (But at least I did not get the annoying email on a 5 minutes interval).

                What I really suspect, is the Web browser connection. I will post a new topic.

                  Yesterday (Wednesday 29th November 2023) I upgraded my pfSense router
                  from v2.7.0-RELEASE and 'nut' version 2.8.0_2
                  to v2.7.1-RELEASE with 'nut' version 2.8.2

                  Now after 24 hours of normal usage, and having done a couple of test mains power breaks,
                  all the issues I was previously having with the intermittent USB monitoring of my Eaton-3S-550 UPS, and associated missing notification emails, appear to have been resolved.
