      Good day from Singapore,

I had attempted upgrading my pfsense firewall appliance from 2.6.0 to 2.7.0 on 16 July 2023 Sunday.

However, after the reboot, the monitor went blank. There is no output on my monitor. I had to attempt a 2nd reboot.

After the 2nd reboot, my hardware appliance told me that pfSense cannot boot, because many files are missing and the pfsense kernel is also missing.

In the end, I had to download the pfsense usb stick image, install pfsense 2.7.0 FROM SCRATCH, and restore my previously backed up config file. After I did this, everything starts working.

So can I say upgrading pfsense from 2.6.0 to 2.7.0 is not supported?

      Regards,

Many people have upgraded successfully from 2.6 to 2.7. It sounds like there was an issue in your previous installation and it wasn't able to upgrade some part of the system properly. Without a lot more detail it's impossible to speculate about what the cause may have been in your particular case.

            Hi Bendida,

Looks like I am not the only one who encountered this problem.

            Thanks for your heads up.

I'm having problems with upgrading from 2.7dev to 2.7
I have asked in 3 different ways with 3 different posts.
and have got zero interest or response.
Anyhow there does not seem to be much interest and talk around 2.7 release yet.
Even the release itself seem much much more quiet and subdued than I'd expect.

I feel more like I do now.

@N8LBV An interesting point. I would guess that a lot of the avid forum users here moved to Plus, especially if they qualify for a free license, so would not be using 2.7.

re: "No monitor output" I would expect to see the BIOS startup sequence, which is before pfSense boots.

re: upgrading from dev, I've never used a dev version that I can recall. There are plenty of threads about upgrade issues, repo/certificate issues, etc. Reinstalling would start clean so if you can't figure out another way, that is an option. Did you change your update branch back to Current?

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@SteveITS I ended up putting a bunch of my systems on 2.7dev because it fixed an openVPN server problem I was having.
Tried forever to get it reliable on 2.6 but that never cut it.
Switched to 2.7dev and it's worked flawlessly ever since.

Now I have a pack of systems out there than will not upgrade from the interface.
All of them just say "Unable to check for updates"

So from the interface I have no options to do anything here.

This (the update interface) was working fine before the release came out..
I was updating all of the 2.7dev boxes to the latest dev. frequently.

Now they all are doing this.
It looks as if my only option is to re-install and pray the config file from 2.7dev is compatible.
But I sure would like to know what the official take on this and if this update path is possible.
It's odd that my other posts are not responded to at all.

I also posted on the release page and admin moved my post.
It has not been touched or responded to.

I sound impatient but I'm not.
Just curious what my next step is.
My dev systems are performing great.
But I need to eventually get them moved to stable. :)

I feel more like I do now.

                    Hi,

Can I upgrade pfsense CE 2.7.0 to pfsense plus? Are the web GUI similar and easy to use?

@Teo-En-Ming-0 yes. Itโ€™s very similar. You need a license.

You cannot change back to current or to anything in the Interface.
No matter which you select it comes back with the same "Unable to check for updates" message.

I feel more like I do now.

Pretty much the entire reason I am posting about this.
