My netgate 1100 worked for a day. I could go to the GUI.. it requested I update the software. I let it run. Said success then it kept trying to restart over and over. I left it going while I went to the store. Came back to page can't be displayed. Only one light is on now. Can't do anything at all. No IP address. So I contacted support for the firmware. Followed the instructions. Won't even add the driver to device manager. Prolific never comes up under ports. Windows 11 should have the driver. I got putty but nothing shows up. Tried looking for drivers but nothing adds it to device manager. Tried a few cables. Still only one light is on the green circle. The square or diamond won't light up. Do I have a bad unit? I tried clicking the reset button. Nothing

      Please help

@jgallagherco Try moving the USB cable to another port in the PC. I’ve had cases where that makes Windows redetect a device.

It should show up as a COM port. Usually COM3 or higher.

How do you know it kept trying to restart without seeing the console? If you’re talking about the web page with the countdown it’s just retrying, waiting for the web server to come online. An update should only take 10-15 min or so, however.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Changing USB ports finally made prolific USB serial come up. It says com4 so I continued with the instructions. It's on a black Putty screen. Nothing is happening.

Before I left for the store it had a green line saying update successful. There was a restart timer that kept counting down. Then would say trying again and again.. so I just let it go. Figured it would be restarted eventually. But when I came back it had only one light on. Everything said page can't be displayed.

@jgallagherco Press Enter, see if it’s waiting for input.

            Light patterns: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/io-ports.html#led-patterns

if it’s new, Netgate support/TAC should help if it really ran off the rails.

Never boot during an upgrade but if you’re stuck hours later it’s already in a bad state. You can at least watch the boot from console or reinstall from there.

Reinstalled is less complicated than it sounds.

So I got a little bit further. During the black putty screen I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Started to show some stuff. I stopped autoboot and typed usb recovery in the prompt. But I don't think the stick I flashed is working. I think I have to run out and get another stick.

Thinking I'm getting closer to figuring it out. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'll let you know how it goes. If I get a stick properly flashed I feel like it might work

So far I flashed the new stick. Etcher said success. Went much faster than my other USB stick. Went through all the updates. Looks like I'm back in business. Software is latest version. I can access the gui again. Wiped the sweat off my forehead. So far so good. Thanks for the help.
