I'm running on an old HP t610 thin client. There's a PCIe slot, that's not quite a slot, but I just got the riser for it. Plugged in an old intel NIC... It booted this time!

Right now the LAN is on a USB3<->NIC adapter, getting 60mb out of the 500mb from ISP. So yes, I do need the card.

The thing is, I don't see the intel NIC anywhere. I know the system changed somehow, because the BIOS now wants a fan (looking into that).
So, should pfSense just "see" the NIC, or do I need to add it somehow? Do I need to remove the USB and plug into the NIC for it to "see"?

        2 Q:

        1. Are you running Plus? If so your NDI will change and you will need a new license.

        2. What is the model of NIC? Is it supported by your installation's release of FreeBSD? (12.x for 2.5/2.6, 21.x, 22.x; 14.x for 23.x/2.7)

          Run:

          pciconf -lv

Make sure it appears on the PCIe bus.

If it is detected it should show in the boot log and will be available to assign in Interfaces > Assignment.

Thank you! I keep forgetting I'm running a *nix, not a GUI

              1. I ass-u-me that's the paid service? No, I'm not paying for this

              2. Intel PRO/1000 PT Quad PN: 39y6138. I've used it with pfSense before, I'm guessing the driver is still there.
                I'm running latest pfSense, 2.7.0-RELEASE (amd64). FreeBSD 14.0-CURRENT
2.5) I also have Intel Gigabit VT Quad Port PN: MY-0YT674 and Intel PRO/1000 PT Dual Port PN: D33682

I like the PT Quad because it has two chips, I can run two lines (1 & 3) from it with less degradation

Sorry if that came across harsh, I'm a disabled vet setting up a home lab (I cosplay as a SysAdmin). My VA pension is not enough to buy the support

@imWACCo Plus for HOME and LAB users (aka zero support from Netgate TAC) is free.

The PRO/1000 PT Quad is dead. I'm using the Intel Gigabit VT Quad Port. So the good news is no magic smoke.

                        TestMy.net 85.1 down, 79 up
                        Google 91.0 down, 88.4 up
                        SpeedTest,net 94.30 Up, 94.56 down

Something's not right there, it should be over 400mbs each way. (paying for 500mbs fiber) All ethernet ports are 1g and all cable is 5e or better.

That smell looks (smokes ?) like a 100 Mbit / sec negotiated connection somewhere.
It's NIC LED color decode time for the entire path ^^

They are capable of doing 1 Gbit sec. Doesn't necessarily means they are actually doing so.

A valid test is : get pfSense (the device its running on) out of the equitation, to see if you reach now the 400 mbits

Yup that^. Those numbers are too close to 100Mbps. Check the actual linked speed of all the NICs involved.
