    So again, except this time on a newer model SG1100, tried an upgrade from 22.01 to 23.01 and again its failed misreably. System down hard, and this time cannnot even access the com port to see what is going on. I have a USB-Serial Controller with the yellow triangle with exclamation point in it.

    My windows can open the serial port on this older SG1100 just fine, but not this newer unit.

    I tried the universal windows driver from https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads

    what should I try next?

      @oldschoolrouterjockey
      Did you try to change the baud rate in the Windows console?
      pfSense uses 115200 by default as far as I know.

        The 1100 doesn't use a Silabs usb-com device. Try the Prolific driver:

          OK That prolific driver solved this, leaving me with two questions, lol:

          1. why was I able to get a serial connection on my other 1100 today but not this one that today started giving me problems?
          2. how was i directed, earlier today, to a silabs driver?

          I hate it when I confuse myself even more....

            @oldschoolrouterjockey said in serial port not recognized in Win11:

            If it's showing that way under Universal Serial Bus Controllers that's not the right section, either...it shows under Ports:
            https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/connect-to-console.html#locate-the-console-port-device

            Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
            When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

              Probably the slightly older chip in he older 1100 was supported by the included driver in Windows 11. A newer chip revision is not so requires a driver update.

              I'm not sure why you were directed to the Silabs driver. If that was by us that was a mistake, I apologise.
