Can I use my sg-1100 as a FTTP router?
-
I have just signed up with Zen Internet for a FTTP package after ditching Virgin media. I received their FritzBox 7530 but it seems that I cannot put it into modem only mode.
I noticed that in the WAN config I can setup PPPoE and put in username and password so I was wondering is it possible to use my SG-1100 as the router and ditch the FritzBox completely? Thanks

Does it have a seperate ONT of some sort? The 1100 cannot connect to GPON dircetly, if that's what you have.
What bandwidth is it? The 1100 will not pass 1Gbps PPPoE.
Steve
Edit: Looks like the FritzBox 7530 doesn't have fiber port so I guess must supply a separate ONT.

@stephenw10 Thanks for the response.
Yes it has a separate ONT box and the speed of it is 910Mb so that sounds like its all good.
I have tried plugging the WAN port into the ONT and setting the WAN port to PPPoE, filled in my username and password but it never connects.
Any advice on how to work out what is wrong?
Thanks

It might require a VLAN. Or priority tagging. Do Zen have any guidance for 3rd party routers?
You will probably see no more than 500Mbps through the 1100 in that setup though.

Took me quite a bit to get it working but I have it now, and you were exactly right @stephenw10 I am only getting 480Mbps through my SG-1100.... still its WAY faster and better than virgin was. Will need to think about upgrading soon.
Thanks again

Oh I just thought of something!
So my switch has a couple of SFP ports would it be a bad idea to try and skip the ONT completely and plug the fibre into my switch?
Would it improve my speed any? Or should I just get new hardware? -
The incoming fibre from Openreach (or pretty much anyone) is GPON. You need a GPON adapter of some sort, like the ONT. You can get GPON SFP adapters but they need to be programmed.
It's unlikely you would see any advantage by doing that anyway.
