Hardware Failure Transfer NDI (question)
-
Hi Netgate TAC,
What is the process for transferring the TAC Lite OEM license between physical OEM hosts (so there would be different NDI serial number) if there was a hardware failure on the original OEM device?
Reason: there is an option to sign up for 2 years and during that time hardware failure(s) might occur. I am unable to locate this in documentation or process from Netgate.
Thank you in advance,
M. -
It is possible to migrate a support subscription to a new NDI in the event of a hardware failure or some other unavoidable change.
You would need to open a support ticket detailing the issue to get that migrated.

Is Netgate's policy still a "one time courtesy migration"? -
Technically the support is against the NDI specifically. However we not unreasonable (IMO at least
) if your hardware fails and has to be replaced that's clearly unexpected and we can move it. Open a ticket with us to discuss.

Maybe you guys should discuss that with your leader Jim Thompson aka gonzopancho?

There are plenty of other ways you can end up with a different NDI though.
Yeah, see that's an issue. And it happens often enough that it's a concern for your paying customers. Again, you are not doing customers a favor by migrating their subscription. You are allowing customers to use the subscription that they purchased without undue limitations.
All Netgate needs to do is post an official blog article stating that TAC lite subscriptions are transferrable between NDIs without limitations.
If you need to ensure customers do not abuse their subscription by activating multiple instances then have each instance ping your activation server at a predetermined interval.
The current situation reeks of shady business practices.

I'm not happy with the NDI licensing setup either - I work at home in an area with no mobile coverage and no copper land line, so if my router dies I need to be able to swap in another box with the same pfsense version and config without being forced to go for a drive to raise a ticket - it's already a pain that there are no installation downloads for pfsense+
What's needed is a hardware independent licence key that you can install on the box (and is part of the config backup). And a separate trial option with a 30 day expiration or similar for dev/test/setup check...

@stephenw10 thank you for answering my question. Nothing further. Netgate will support this that is wonderful news :-)

This would be great, in the old days (2 weeks ago) I would test things on my old desktop pfSense+, now I cross fingers and hope.
