Feeling like a NOOB
-
It has been 7 or 8 years since I set up my office PfSense from scratch. I have no problem administering it now but I am having one hell of a time setting one up from scratch for the house.
Install goes well enough including access to the web management page but when I go to change the IP address of the LAN, I can no longer connect to the device. I can get a DHCP from it, I just can't ping it or get to the management console.
So I change the IP back and now I can't ping or get to the web console with the original / default IP. Very frustrating.
Can someone give me Step1, Step2, Step3, etc. so I can change the default 192.168.1.1 to another address (and DHCP serve to that same subnet).
TYIA,

You'll need a monitor and keyboard if you haven't setup access to the firewall by SSH. Then, you select 2, then 2 for LAN to assign LAN IP...add private IP of your choice, ex., 10.1.2.3 then Add subnet mask, usually 24, then answer yes for DHCP, and assign lease range, then no, to have webgui remain hhtps...confirm and you will be able to access webgui by the IP you had assigned...

@NollipfSense The only thing I did different from what you said is that I said yes to http. But if that is all that is required ... I must be getting tired or something. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

@tom__w they have an amazing wizard buit into the software, have you attempted that first? It walks users right through basic config.

@tom__w I’m trying to remember if choosing HTTP disables HTTPS…
Ensure your new subnet doesn’t have a /32 mask; pfSense defaults to that in some places. You’ll need to change DHCP range or set a static IP but firewall rules on LAN are open by default.

@SteveITS I did that last week with an internal WiFi card. I was like where is my dhcp tab... It's broken nope /32 on it on the interface by default haha

@JonathanLee I have too.
I had a client once tell me about a programming change request, “I want to be all powerful, but a prompt of, ‘Are you sure, knucklehead?’ would be great.”
