      Anyone have any idea what changed between the 2.7.1 and 2.7.0 that would cause a trouble with a Chelsio card?
      2.7.0 I had no problems at all. Did the upgrade remotely and the system wouldn't come back up.
      After getting physical access I saw the link lights on the t540 turning on and off constantly. Not blinking as in showing activity, they were shutting off.
      Got everything back up by going back to onboard copper ports and tried to switch one network back to the fiber ports to test with.
      I did manage to keep that one network up for over 5 minutes by hard coding to 1000full but as soon as I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it went back to the problem again.
      Seems like it's a negotiation problem but I would think that hard coding would make it work even after I unplugged it.

      I did notice the chelsio firmware was updated with the 2.7.1 upgrade. Wondering if that's the actual problem I'm having. Does anyone know if downgrading is possible?

        Do you see anything logged at boot? Any errors? Or in the system log when it's flapping like that?

          So far no issues to report on pfSense Plus 23.09 with Chelsio T540-SO-CR. Could this issue be isolated to non SO cards? Have you tried shutting down the system completely, unplugging the power, and then restarting to see if it makes any difference? Maybe the firmware update didn't fully finish? Hope this helps.

            No errors on boot. I'll have to check when the ports are in use.
            Not sure when I'll get a chance to check that.

            I'm assuming the firmware upgrade came from the updating of FreeBSD in 2.7.1. Apparently it's working in FreeBSD from what I can find, is there something in pfSense itself that was changed that would cause this?

              I actually did try that, that's when it did the firmware upgrade.
              I'll have to check but do you know if 23.09 included the same FreeBSD update as 2.7.1?
              Did you notice if your firmware updated?
              Can you check which version you're running?
              sysctl dev.t5nex.0.firmware_version

              dev.t5nex.0.firmware_version: 1.27.4.0

                  @Jarhead Just an update, about 10 minutes after plugging it in it finally linked solid and has been up since.
                  Not sure what's causing the negotiation delay though.

                    Hi @Jarhead - I just checked and my T540-SO-CR is also on firmware 1.27.4.0 as of pfSense Plus 23.09. Do you have any other tunables / customizations set for the card?

                      @tman222 I have all the pfSense suggested tunables.
                      Here's my loader.conf.local file:

                      hw.cxgbe.niccaps_allowed="1"
                      hw.cxgbe.toecaps_allowed="0"
                      hw.cxgbe.rdmacaps_allowed="0"
                      hw.cxgbe.iscsicaps_allowed="0"
                      hw.cxgbe.fcoecaps_allowed="0"
                      hw.cxgbe.pause_settings="0"
                      hw.cxgbe.fw_install="2"

                      The last line I just added after this trouble and hasn't been used yet.
                      I'm thinking of trying to go back to 2.7.0, with that last line used.
                      Apparently it will allow the card to be downgraded.
                      Then, set the last line to "0", which will prevent it from being upgraded, and go back to 2.7.1.
                      But since you're at the latest firmware and no problems, I have to find out if 23.09 included the latest FreeBSD.
                      @stephenw10 Would you know the answer to that?

                        Yup, 23.09 and 2.7.1 are built on very close FreeBSD versions I would expect the drivers to be identical.

                        Do you see anything logged on whatever it's connected to? Hard to imagine why it's losing link like that and then stabilising.

                          @stephenw10 Did the downgrade by going back to 2.7.0 with the tunable set to allow firmware downgrade. It installed 1.27.0.0.
                          Has the same problem.
                          Went back to 2.7.1 with 1.27.4.0 again. Same problem.
                          Looking like a hardware problem at this point.
                          Gonna try to get a chance to test the card in a windows pc.
                          I'll update this thread with results.

                            Getting more weird now.
                            Took the router to work today, plugged into 3 networks there and saw the same problem.
                            Installed Windows, plugged into the same networks and all worked perfectly. Instant links.
                            Went back to pfSense, saw that the Windows install downgraded the firmware and pfSense updated it back to the latest, plugged into the same networks and it worked perfectly. Was gonna chalk it up to a bad firmware upgrade but as soon as I got it installed at home again, back to the problem.
                            Also, got this:
                            info.0
                            textdump.tar.0

                            Can you take a look at that?

                            I'm starting to wonder if the old problem with Chelsio and Wireguard is back.
                            @tman222 are you running Wireguard with any active tunnels?

                            I'm gonna build a couple OpenVPN tunnels and disable the Wireguard to see if that corrects this.

                              That's this: https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/14917

                              So likely related because the Chelsio NIC keeps losing link which is when that bug is triggered.

                                Hi @Jarhead - I am using Wireguard, but it's not going through the Chelsio card on the WAN side. I'm curious, did you also end up trying a different SFP/SFP+ transceiver to see if that might make a difference?

                                  I did. Actually went to copper SFP's and still had the same issues.
                                  I thought of Wireguard because there was a known problem with Wireguard and Chelsio but I thought that was fixed with either 2.6 or 2.7, can't remember which. But when I did the upgrade to 2.7.1 I also lost 2 of my 3 Wireguard tunnels.
                                  Haven't had a chance to go any further into this and probably won't for a while. I have four gig ports that I am using now instead of the Chelsio.
