Best free DNS provider?

I just resolve - its free ;)

Are you looking for dns provider, that hosts your dns? What features are you looking for? Been pretty impressed with ease of use and feature set of cloudflare.. dnssec is just click, they offer all the different things like CAA, etc.

What exactly are you looking to do? I hosts a few of my domains with them.

I'm with the corny-one above : I vote for these : Root Servers :

The authoritative name servers that serve the DNS root zone, commonly known as the “root servers”, are a network of hundreds of servers in many countries around the world. They are configured in the DNS root zone as 13 named authorities

If all these 13 shut down, the Internet is down. Period.

Every DNS 'provider' use (eventually) one of these 'DNS root servers'. pfSense offers you to tap into this system out of the box - no setup needed.
And then you would be using one of the zillion TLD servers, like teh one for dot com, dot org, dot net, not whatever, etc..
And then one of the at least two domain name servers. Like : you have to ask "ns1.facebook.com" what the IPv4 is for "www.facebook.com". Why would you want to ask someone else this info ? It's like : "ask Willy what his name is, don't ask Peet". We all agree that Willy knows best about Willy.

Advantages : works great - can't fail. Is extremely reliable and will answers 100 % correct if the domain name admin activated DNSSEC. Free of usage costs.

@AndyRH Just set up DuckDNS. Works well and even picked up quickly when the IP changed. I even donated....

I've looked and I do have "DNSSEC" enabled where my domain name is (infomaniak).

The "detail" I'm missing :-) after reading your message, is how to set it up in my pfsense. Could you give me some hints?

I use the pfSense default DNS 'resolver' settings.

Btw : using the resolver has nothing to do with the actual question "Best free dynamic DNS provider?"

The best dynamic DNS provider is the one that works best for you.
That said : nothings lasts. As soon as you use a service, whatever service, free, or not, you should be on the watch for a replacement.

I'm using "a dynamic DNS provider" myself, and I guess I took the worst choice : I pay for it, and I have to maintain it. On both sides !!
As I already have some domain names ( a couple of $ a year ) and a dedicated server ( $$ a month ) (bare bone or VPS, you chose) I have everything to be my own Dyndns provider.
It started with : Let's install bind ....
It ended with : it never ended - although maintenance is a mere 5 minutes every 3 months or so.
I gained : I do presume that I took the right road to learn what DNS actually is. That's priceless, and the knowledge will never age.
So, my "Dyndns" is free for me now, and it's by far the best one.

When I've installed pfSense, and didn't add, touch, modify any 'DNS' settings.
And DNS was perfect as it was.
That's like : do nothing and you'll be fine.

I know there is a lot of anti-Cloudflare feeling out there, but purchase a domain for a couple of dollars, and use a free Cloudflare account, and you can have really easy dynamic DNS up and running in a few minutes that is totally under your control. It works for me great.

You're right. Some (most ?) registrars will handle Dyndns if you have a domain name with them.
Nothing wrong with Floudflare
