@jshoe That keeps coming up here. I’ve had limited experience with Realtek but we had one NIC in our office for years before replacing the device this year.

If you search there is a thread or two about upgrading/installing newer Realtek drivers but that was from before v2.7.1 so not sure if they were included or not.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@SteveITS I've seen them all but they all seem to be over a year old. I wasn't sure if it was addressed in some way in a newer version so I figured I'd start a new thread.

@jshoe gateway monitoring turns off that WAN if it gets enough packet loss etc. more useful if you have 2+.

When it’s down LAN is OK?

@SteveITS Yes. The only thing I want to use the PF box for is basically a teansparent firewall and IPS when all is working properly.

@jshoe try putting a switch between pfSense and upstream.

@SteveITS That's just another expense. If I were to do that I would just go buy a hardware firewall appliance with IPS. I'd really just like to stop this connection from dropping.

@jshoe if I had the spare money my ideal setup would be a hardware firewall then the router.

I don't have the money for that and just want something simple and a transparent firewall is my best option for what I need. I need my Netgear wireless router to handle everything for the mesh to work properly. I just want the PF to block bad traffic. I do enough at work, so I want something simple but secure at home.

If I can get this box to stop losing it's connection I'd be all set. I'm looking at OPNSense to see if it has the same Realtek issues. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, but my setup must remain Modem -> firewall (PF or other) -> Netgear wireless router.

I'd buy a Firewalla for simplicities sake if they were cheaper. Plug it in between the modem and router and be done. I don't want anything but what I said at home. I deal with the big stuff at work

                Thanks

@JonathanLee 4.1.6_13 and pfsense version 2.7.1. I'd also like to note that this happened about a year ago with and without snort installed. I believe it to be related to the Realtek NICs but that's all I have that I can use right now. It's a mini PC with rthernet built in.

                    Thanks

First check the system logs for watchdog timeouts from the Realtek driver.

If you do see those you can try the alternative re(4) driver.

                      Steve
