      Hi everyone,

I ran into an interesting problem when I tried to update to 23.09.1 yesterday. First off, the update was not showing and then I realize that my NDI was different. I have not added any new cards at all. The system I have is one of the newer Supermicro SuperServer's and I was having issues with CATERR's on the cpu and reach out to supermicro. They sent a BIOS fix, so I moved from version 1.2a to version 1.5 on the unit for the BIOS. The good news is that the CATERR's then disappeared. Basically, that is all I did. The only other thing I did is plugging in a data cable to the usb port of the unit from an APC UPS. So I am a little worried now because I have not idea what could have caused the NDI to change. I reached out to Netgate Tech support since I have a TAC lite license and they quickly resolved the issue by moving my license to the new NDI (Thanks Kris and Chris for the excellent and quick support!). I am at a loss as to the cause and was wondering if anyone else could shed some light on this because the tech support said they didn't believe that a BIOS update would change the NDI. Thanks for any insight as I would like to avoid this from happening in the future.

I think I figured it out! I noticed in my interface assignments that I did indeed have a new interface called ue0. I recall that in the BMC of the unit I have that I did enabled the the host interface which is the following:

Host interface (HI) provides Ethernet over USB solution
which has ability to connect ethernet devices via USB.
        • Enable - User can enable/disable this service.
        • Host IP Address - Setup a host IP address that is assigned to host OS
        • Service IP address - Management host interface service IP

I am definitely not disabling it now as this most likely would lead to my NDI changing again. It would be great if someone with much more knowledge than me could confirm that this might have been the culprit.

@xyaes “ue” should be a USB device IIRC.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Yes, I believe the ue0 interface became active when I enabled the host interface in the BMC. At least that is my theory. I did plug in and APC data cable into one of the usb port as well to monitor my UPS through the NUT package but I don’t think that would have triggered it. I really wish I paid more attention when I did these things to see what might have changed the NDI.

Yes that's almost certainly the cause if it didn't exist (or was disabled) before.

Thanks Stephen for confirming. Now that it is enable, I will never turn it off 😀.
