@kdmiller61 What version pfSense are you on? If not the latest, did you try installing a package before upgrading?

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Yup, it probably needs to be forced back to the correct pkg version. See: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/troubleshooting/upgrades.html#upgrade-not-offered-library-errors

I followed the instructions and tried to update to 2.72 and got the below message

Number of packages to be reinstalled: 1
              1/1 reinstalling pfsense-boot 2.7.2
              1/1 extracting pfsensee-boot 22..7.2 ... Done
              updating the efi loader
install: //boot/efi/efi/boot/INS@cJq5yv: No space left on device
pkg-static: post i Install script failed

there is plenty of room on the drive, is the director allocation full if so how can I expand it

I followed these instructions and I appear to be good to go
