Setting up IPv6?
-
I'm having some trouble setting up IPv6 on my network, and I'd love a little help if possible! I'm a bit of a networking beginner, but I'm going to figure this out one way or another. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding or using the wrong term though.
Right now, on my pfSense box the WAN_DHCP6 is giving me a link-local address and is offline - and haven't been able to get it to go up yet.
For reference, I have Spectrum (who, unfortunately, were very unhelpful when I asked for info about getting set up with IPv6).
So far I have tried:
Checked "Allow IPv6"
Changed "set prefix hint" to enabled
Changed the prefix (initially to a /56 but also tried a /64).
Changed the checkbox to "Do Not Wait for A RA"Other things I saw might be worth trying were - Request only an IPv6 prefix (though I'm not quite sure that gets me up and running).
The one weird thing was that I did see under the DHCPv6 leases that some were handed out, though they were all listed as down. They were not link-local though - were they SLAAC?
I saw something about doing a traceroute upstream and using the first GUA I find but I wasn't really sure how that worked exactly.
Let me know if there's other helpful information I could provide, including packet capture.

A link local address is expected. Some ISPs also provide a global address and some don't. However, you would have disabled that by requesting prefix only.
Your ISP might not respond to a ping on the gateway address, so you'll have to use one further out for the monitor address. I had the same situation so I did a traceroute to Google and used the closest address that turned up.

@JKnott got it- thanks very much! And forgive my inexperience here but what do I do with that first hop address? I can’t get it from pfSense device directly (IPv6 times out) but I can form other devices on the network.

On System / Routing / Gateways, you should see a couple of lines for WAN_DHCP & WAN_DHCPv6. You can edit the one for DHCPv6 and select Disable Gateway Monitoring. This will allow you to use IPv6 and find the nearest address to use.. Then, if you want to use monitoring, you can put the address you found in the Monitor IP box and remove the check for Disable Gateway Monitoring.

Okay excellent! And where do I input the next address that I find?

Or do I just put it into the monitor IP field and that's it?
I appreciate your help by the way - pretty sure you were involved in troubleshooting a few of the threads I was reading!

Yep. That's it.

I've been running IPv6 for almost 14 years and 8 with pfSense, so I do have some experience.
Almost my entire career, going back to 1972, has been on the technical side of telecom, computers and networks, including at IBM. I first learned about IPv4 when I took a course at a local community college in early 1995. Even then, in that class, I realized 32 address bits weren't enough. Around the same time I first read about IPv6 in the April 1995 issue of Byte magazine. I knew then IPv6 was the way to go and have done what I can to promote it.
BTW, along the way I was certified in Novell Netware 3.x, OS/2 Warp 4 and Cisco CCNA. I also took the course for Netware 4, but didn't take the test as by that time I was working at IBM and my focus changed.
