did a dumb and cleared contents of /boot/loader.conf
-
boot is now failing with
Mounting from zfs:pfSense/ROOT/default failed with error 2: unknown file system.
pretty sure it's at least partly because zfs_load="YES" isn't contained in any of the loader files. also possibly due to other missing variables.
i did backup the original contents, and i've figured out how to manually set variables from the loader prompt. but then i'm not sure if i also need to manually load the zfs.ko module (and possibly the opensolaris.ko module too, possibly others) from the loader prompt before initiating boot.
FWIW i can see the empty contents of /boot/loader.conf from the loader prompt. i'm assuming there's no way to modify that file from the loader prompt/pre-boot?

What pfSense version? What hardware?

You probably only need to loads zfs.ko before loading the kernel.

@stephenw10 resolved before seeing this, but you are correct. thanks very much.
for posterity, from loader prompt:
load /boot/kernel/zfs.ko
