mini pc, or soc, with dual 2.5GB, or dual 10GB, for pfsense duty which ones?
-
Hello,
I wish to get off of my old pc into new hardware that has pfsense support for dual 2.5GB, or dual 10GB NICs.
Has anyone done this and can recommend models?
Thanks! -
@buggz Hard to recommend as we don't know what kind of bandwidth you have and the use case. For a home with a couple of kids playing games online or for an office with 200 users... 500 down/20 up (typical cable where I am in California) or symmetrical gig or something else...
I used to 'roll my own', take an ITX motherboard and an I3 or Pentium and 8gigs ram, for home use with cable. Switched to a mini 'industrial' PC and never looked back. At first was using a 'Qotom' with 6x gig Intel ports and a 7th gen low power I5 but mid last year, bought the one in my sig. 6x 2.5gig Intel i226 ethernet ports, and an Alderlake Pentium with a P Core (2 threads) and 4 E Cores which I admit is overkill for home use but call it future proofing. And it uses less power than the ITX computer and runs silent... You can find similar with two ethernet ports, but I put vlans on the ports so it was worth getting 6 ports as I can't add them later...
