I tried to upgrade to this version on my 7100 and waited forever for it to return. After nothing I consoled in and I am at the title root prompt. I can reboot. I can see the config.xml. so it looks like the system is there. Not sure where to go from here. I couldn't find anything helpful in the upgrade troubleshooting doc. Any suggestions on how to get the system to boot or restore?

@mAineAc “forever” as in, more than 15 minutes?

If you have ZFS you can revert from the loader menu: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/zfsbe/loader.html

You can get an installer file from Netgate and reinstall: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/xg-7100/reinstall-pfsense.html

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@cmcdonald yes I have already read that. This is a netgate 7100 and I didn't have a problem initiating the upgrade. The system is booting into single user mode. Looks like everything is there.

@SteveITS I have already consoled in. It was at single user mode. The last line after it boots up says init 32 -- can't exec for single user: no such file.

@mAineAc I don’t have any insight into the dev versions. Christian would be a much better resource there, ha.

I did misread you post that you interrupted the upgrade, which is a common post on here. It sounds like it didn’t complete though, so if you’re trying to recover the above two options still apply.

And if you don’t have ZFS, reinstalling would convert to that, with several benefits. See for example https://www.netgate.com/blog/faster-safer-updates-in-pfsense-plus-software-version-24.03, or the snapshot recovery as I mentioned.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.

@SteveITS Not sure about zfs. This is a default netgate 7100 install. I didn't make many changes. Not sure if it uses zfs by default.

That's a UFS installation. You want to reinstall to get on ZFS.

Though I do need to retest upgrading from 23.09 to 24.03 on UFS since it's still a supported path.

I'd suggest reaching out to TAC for installation media for your appliance. You should get a response for such requests near immediately.

If you don't, send me DM me your NDI and email address and I can nudge them personally for you

@cmcdonald I was able to open a ticket and get the install media easily. I am back on 23.09.1 and have restored my previous config. Good to go now thank you for your help.
