Lost the internet and using the ip address of internal device will not ping. When the internet is back online I can then ping local devices. I should be able to ping internal devices on the 192.168. subnet. The gateway is the netgate at 192.168.1.1 and I use 2 external dns but that should not stop internal pings.

        pfSense or something else?
Can you ping another internal device by its IP?

@oznet pfsense has zero to do with internal devices talking to each other. Unless you setup a bridge on pfsense. And even if you had setup a bridge, the internet being down wouldn't matter for internal devices talking to each other.

Was maybe dns down, or in the middle of trying to restart because your wan interface went down and you were trying to ping by fqdn?

@johnpoz dns was up i think it was the netgate router there was an update pending so not sure if that had a role but everything is fine now. I rebooted the router and upgraded and things are fine now even when I unplug the wan interface. thnaks
