@bigbob If your WAN is 192.168.1.1/24 then your LAN can be 192.168.101.1/24 since those are different subnets.

Your computer has to have an address in 192.168.101.0/24 in order to talk to 192.168.101.1.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@SteveITS can't I just change the Wan address?

Yes you can change either, they just have to be different subnets. Typically there is not much choice of what to use for WAN...either it's a public IP or whatever is already in use by the upstream network.

@SteveITS OK. How am I supposed to access the net gate interface if I'm successful? Still have to connect directly with ethernet cable?

@SteveITS also am I supposed to keep the internet cable, Wan, disconnected from net gate 4200 whole time?

@bigbob I'm losing what you're trying to do. In your OP you wrote you changed the LAN IP but later asked about changing the WAN IP.

pfSense (and any router) doesn't really function if WAN and LAN are the same subnet. So you need to make them different and go from there.

The point of disconnecting pfSense WAN temporarily is so you can actually browse to the LAN IP and make changes. Once you have a valid setup you can plug in WAN again.

In order to browse to the pfSense LAN IP you need some sort of network connection to that interface. It doesn't matter how it works. You can use a patch cable, yes.

What is your WAN network subnet?

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.

                  @SteveITS I'm guessing my Wan is 192.168.1.1
What I don't understand is why when I change my lan, and I hit reboot, it doesn't finish. But if I keep my lan at 192.168.1.1 it does?

@SteveITS but more than anything, and I'm very appreciative though, is why whatever you're going over with me is not in the instructions?

Did you change your computer's IP address to match the network you set in pfSense ?

After that reload, pfsense will be expecting a connection from the same network.

So, if you configured pfsense's LAN IP address to be 192.168.101.1 255.255.255.0, you should configure your computer's IP address in the same network, you can use 192.168.101.2 255.255.255.0

After that, just try to connect to pfsense's IP address again, but now, using 192.168.101.1 in your browser.

dead on arrival, nowhere to be found.

@mcury when I configure it in the setup, and I change address on lan, do I have to type in the 255 stuff? Or just the 192 stuff?

                          pfsense LAN:
                          IP address: 192.168.101.1

                          your computer:
                          IP address: 192.168.101.2
                          subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

@mcury right but on the setup page there's no where for me to type the subnet. Just says 24 below? Is that where I type the subnet, and change the 24?

your connection to pfsense will work without DNS and gateway, but you won't have internet access.
for now, let those aside then, once you restore your connection to pfsense, we will look at it.

                                            ok, that is WAN interface.
which means that you will need to change LAN's interface IP address to 192.168.101/24.

So, just change LAN as already been discussed, change your computer's IP address as well, and try to open 192.168.1.101 after that in your browser.

dead on arrival, nowhere to be found.
