Adding ram to 7100 stops it from posting.
-
Hey,
I just got a netgate xg-7100-1u and I’ve been really liking it. It has just the factory 8gb of ram so I want to upgrade it with a 16gb stick. I added a Crucial CT16G4SFD824A and after adding it, it doesn't do anything. The power turns on but nothing to the console after being connected with a console cable. I’ve let it sit for 30 minutes. When I take the stick out, it boots normally. Im on the latest release of coreboot and pfsense. Has anyone else had this issue or is there a known solution?
Thank you. -

Have a look at the following thread: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/154058/xg-7100-1u-memory-additional-memory-specs.
There's a recommendation for what RAM worked:Corsair CMSX16GX4M1A2400C16 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) Vengeance SODIMM DDR4 2400 C16 1.2V Memory
Edit: Comparing the two yours should work, the same specs. Try removing the 8G stick (if it got two slots) and use the 16G only.
On that thread https://forum.netgate.com/topic/146400/xg-71001u-ram-upgrade/5 the specs where mentioned:
DDR4 2400MT/s non-ECC, 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB SODIMMs.

Any RAM disk you were creating?

Mmm, it can take far longer to boot than expected if you change the RAM size as it has to retrain it. But not longer than, say, 10mins so it sounds like that stick really isn't compatible.
