Is there anything pfSense users need to do with change over from copper dsl modem to Fidium fiber modem?
I am going to upgrade from 6MB copper to 1GB fiber next week.
I requested a static IP for VPN use for my private cloud, we also get to use IPv6 now. The IPv6 they said will be dynamic.
For my dns over tls does that change anything?
For my dns I have to enable AAA now because I can use it.
For the WAN side do I just set both to DHCP and let the static IP populate right? But for the IPv6 does that also just auto populate? My DSL was IPv4 only ISP
I did confirm that I can use my own equipment, they will disable the wireless on the fiber modem for me. I will have to also change my traffic shaper to use the new bandwidth settings. Other than that I think that is it right? Just turn on the IPv6 and let it go, of course change firewall rules to allow outbound ipv6 also.
Because the 2100-max specs I will have to traffic shape it to the max the firewall can do right? I can not wait to see the VPN speed get maxed out over what I can get out of the copper. Keep in mind I love my copper it always worked great for me.
I use the compex card for guest WiFi, my AP is an AirPort Extreme which has WiFi N speed. So everything now can run at it’s maximum in our home again my equipment will not access the full spectrum of speed but from 6MB to full WiFi N use that is a big jump.

you use for your pfSense.I am going to upgrade from 6MB copper to 1GB fiber next week.
They have often an ONT that comes sorted with a 10 GBit/s port
so it makes sense to think about a device that owns 10 GBit/s ports
or install a switch with 10 GBit/s port in front of your pfSense. You may be free to call them first to get some informations about that.
Your Netgate 2100 is capable to workout- Throughput: 800 - 900 MBit/s
I requested a static IP for VPN use for my private cloud, we also get to use
IPv6 now. The IPv6 they said will be dynamic.Dynamic is changing from time to time the IP so you could think about
to setup a "jumphost" at a provider for some small fee, that you get
then even the vpn to your home.I did confirm that I can use my own equipment, they will disable the wireless > on the fiber modem for me.
If there is wireless it is a router and not a modem!
Ask for an ONT and your credentials.Because the 2100-max specs I will have to traffic shape it to the max the firewall can do right? I can not wait to see the VPN speed get maxed out over what I can get out of the copper. Keep in mind I love my copper it always worked great for me.
You may be thinking of getting hands on a more strong device than the
2100 perhaps. -
You may be thinking of getting hands on a more strong device than the
2100 perhapsTrue, I don't think the 2100 is going to provide the oomph you will want @JonathanLee running at full gig.. I know your a fan of running proxies and stuff.. I don't think the 2100 can push anything close to gig with imix traffic.. Think its more like 250ish imix,
4100, as listed as IMIX Traffic: 1.40 Gbps
The 2100 might be able to do gig with just like a speed test, etc. But yeah you might want to look for a box with a bit more oomph..

It should be more like 600-700ish Mbps tops without IDS or similar packages interfering. Usually I guess about halfway between these:
Firewall (10k ACLs)
IPERF3 Traffic: 964 Mbps
IMIX Traffic: 249 MbpsI have a 2100 but have a nominally 500 Mbps cable connection download that I've speed tested as high as 580...Comcast usually gives 10%+ over their account limit. But even Netgate will tell you not to expect 960.
The 4200 is a big step up but can do well over a gig.
-
@SteveITS that is way better than 6mbs
-
@JonathanLee there’s the spirit!
-
@JonathanLee yeah for sure agree its way over 6mbps... And yeah you will be grinning ear to ear when you hit anything close to gig.. But then the new connection smell will wear off.. And your like WTF only 800 when I should have 940ish... heheheheh
-
Yeah it will be restricted by the 2100. But that's still a 100X speed increase!

@JonathanLee said in Fidium:
The IPv6 they said will be dynamic
Make sure System / Advanced / Networking Do not allow PD/Address release is selected. If your ISP respects it, you will have a virtually static prefix. I've had my prefix for over 5 years.
