    Hello,
I currently have 2 Netgate 7100U (23.09.1 and 24.03) and our provider wants us to connect through 1000Base-LX with an LC connector.

I bought a different SFPs from different provider and none of them is working correctly. The interface is up, but media is always Unknown <rxpause, txpause>. I tried rebooting between plugging/unplugging, I tried ifconfig ix0 down && ifconfig ix0 up every time, but nothing work and I still don't have any connection.

This is the different results I obtained :

I read on the forum that "unknown" is not important and sometime the appliance may work without it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seems to be the case for me.

Is anyone has a SFP 1000Base-LX LC for Netgate 7100U fully working ?

    Regards,

You're right the Unknown link type is common for that type of adapter. You usually need to set the link rate at 1G though. Does it only offer you 'autoselect'?

You may be able to set the advertised speeds to 1G only. sysctl dev.ix.0.advertise_speed=2
It will only allow that if it sees 1G as an option though.

You should try replugging the module before or after boot see if that makes any difference.

Also try: ifconfig ix0 down; ifconfig ix0 up

@stephenw10 Thank you for your answer.
I did follow some of your advices on other threads : thank you for all of the past support you provided ;)

On the GUI, for all of them, I can only select "AutoSelect" as speed.
I tried to set them with a command ifconfig ix0 speed 1000BaseLX but I get the error SIOCSIFMEDIA not configured
I did try everytime to down then up the interface ifconfig ix0 down && ifconfig ix0 up with no success.

I'll try again with the command sysctl dev.ix.0.advertise_speed=2 by the end of week.

Also, I am planning to order the 2 FiberStore specified in this thread by @Derelict .

        Thank you again.

          Hello,
          Unfortunately that command doesn't work

          [24.03-RELEASE][root@fw]/root: sysctl dev.ix.0.advertise_speed=2
dev.ix.0.advertiix0: Advertised speed can only be set on copper or multispeed fiber media types.
          se_speed: 0
          sysctl: dev.ix.0.advertise_speed=2: Invalid argument

I bought SFP1G-LX-31 Generic Compatible SFP 1000BASE-LX/LH 1310nm 10km DOM Duplex LC/UPC SMF Optical Transceiver Module from fs.com (same as the one recommended here https://forum.netgate.com/topic/135794/xg-7100-1u-sfps/5?_=1718121323660) and it does the same thing.
Link is seen up from the NetGate
Down from the switch in front.

So the switch this is connected to shows no link? Do you know how how switch port is configured?

Usually when pfSense shows the interface like that it is linked.

                @stephenw10
The switch had no specific configuration for this port.

My switch is currently Arista DCS-7050S-64-R :

                • when i plug both SFP 1000base-LX on Arista DCS-7050S-64-R : it works
                • when I plug both SFP 10GB on Arista DCS-7050S-64-R it works
                • when I plug one SFP 10GB on Arista and another one on NetGate 7100 : it works
                • when I plug one SFP 1000base-LX on Arista and another one on NetGate 7100 : it doesn't work

I don't exactly know the brand of my provider switch, but if plug one SFP 1000base-LX on my Arista (and other side is on the provider switch) it does work. When I one SFP 1000base-LX on my NetGate 7100 (and other side is on the provider switch) : it doesn't work.

I always have the same media "unknown" with all the SFP 1000base-LX.
Without modyfing any network configuration on NetGate 7100 and just changing SFP from 1000Base-LX to 10GB (and cabling on 10GB SFP on my Arista) : the WAN connection is up immediately (and media is detected).

Hmm, have you tried any dual speed rated SFP modules? Do you see that offering fixed line rates?

No, I saw that FS.Com SFP-10GLR-31 was also recommended on the other thread but I ordered first SFP1G-LX-31.

I think I will abandon now trying to find a compatible 1000Base-LX SFP for Netgate 7100.
I plugged my 1000Base-LX SFP on my Arista for the Internet access and then 10Gb SFP on Arista and NetGate 7100 (switches acting like converter). And that's it.
