        If your existing router is connected to the pfSense WAN then it should still have the DHCP server enabled so pfSense can pull a lease from it.

        pfSense must also run dhcp servers on it's LAN interfaces (in different subnets) so connected clients there can pull leases.

          @stephenw10 currently thats how its configured, but was wondering is it possible to completely get rid of the routers dhcp while having everything working fine on pfsense?

          keep reading that you should only have one dhcp server enabled (router or pfsense)

            You should only ever have on DHCP server per network segment. Here you have at least two segments.

            You can set the pfSense WAN as static and then disable the routers DHCP server.

              @stephenw10 thank you.

              is as simple as switching it on wan interface to static without any more configuring?

                You need to configure a valid IP address, subnet and gateway. But you should be able to use whatever values the router is giving you now via DHCP.
