    Look

    I've been in s/w dev/testing for a very long time. And it's a neverending issue - it's not a bug it's a feature :)

    Follow me pls:

pfS shows the TS widget as green =>

    login-to-view

At the same time, TS is is not running (!) =>

    login-to-view

Remind me, what is the purpose of even having the TS widget?
    What exactly does it show?

It's much better just to remove it IMHO

      https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/15319

Open another redmine but mark it as feature request. Bugs equate it broke/not functional issues. The widget is a new feature, that way it gets coded, it is not a drop everything emergency issue "big bug"

It's clear as is and they can change the status if they want to

I've been in s/w dev/testing for a very long time.

So its strange then why you would have hard time understanding that looking at the "SERVICE" widget.. Showing if the "service process" is running or not vs the what that service is supposed to be doing or not doing, like its connectivity isn't clicking with you.

So for example - here my 3 vpn instances are running 2 server and 1 client.

Notice that service running doesn't tell me if there are any clients actually connected, nor does it tell me if the client is actually connected.

Now I can look and see per the actual client widget that I am connected to the vpn as a client, and if I have clients or not.. But I shut down the other end of my vpn where pfsense connects to as a client.. And the actual widget shows hey its offline - but the service still shows it running..

        login-to-view

So saying they my service widget shows the ts service is running.. But its not connected is not a bug.. Does the widget show you the service is running when its not. Or that its not running when it is.. Then that would be a bug in the service widget.

But what was reported is not a bug in the service widget - what they really want is a widget the gives actual info about the status of the TS operational status... Like the openvpn widget showing if any clients or connected to me, or if my client is actually connected to the server its suppose to connect too. That would be a feature request - for a TS widget..

No OpenVPN and TS are not the same examples.

OpenVPN really allows you to connect clients
vs TS the only things it does connects pfS to the external server

From the user experience standpoint the widget is useless unless it actually indicates that pfS box was successfully connected

But ok. So I’m annoyed and others find it actually useful. Let’s agree to disagree

Its not a TS widget.. its the SERVICE widget... It shows my my ntpd service is running, but that doesn't mean the ntp is actually syncing time..

And my example of vpn is exactly what your not understanding.. The service widget shows that the service is running or not running - it doesn't reflect that service is actually performing its function or not, or the status of the function like connected to where its suppose to connect, or if clients are connected to me or not... Just that the service is running or not running.

That you are having a hard time grasping this concept is what is blowing my mind..

My light switch is in the on state - but the light bulb is not on.. Must be a bug in the switch..

And yes the service widget can be very handy.. If I show that my ntpd service is not running - well its not possible that ntp is working then.. Or if my openvpn service is not running its going to be impossible for clients to connect to me.. Doesn't mean they actually can, or that they are - just that possibility is there..

Just like my light switch.. Ok the light switch is on - maybe the bulb is burnt out, or maybe there is no power, etc..

The service widget is not meant to be the overall status of every service is actually performing its function - its to quickly show you if something on or off.. Doesn't mean its actually functioning or doing what you think it should be doing - just that its on or off.. Like my light switch.

If you find no value in the service widget - then don't display it on your dashboard vs complaining that its not showing you something it not meant to show for any service on pfsense..

Your dhcpd service is running - does that mean clients can get an IP.. No it doesn't but if its not running then for sure they are not.

              @johnpoz

I see no use for the TS widget whatsoever!

I do see usefulness for OpenVPN

Try to explain it to a regular user what exactly the TS widget shows. Oh actually it’s running as a process, so it’s installed, but in fact it’s not connected because it failed. Try to use the same example for DNS it DHCP

The DNS or DHCP widget green, but nothing gets resolved

              Really?

              Haha 😜

@chudak those are widgets --- do you see one called TailScale or TS Widget? NO.. Like you do for openvpn, That is why the redmine linked too said if you want a TS widget put in a feature request.

Your complaint is like saying - why does my apple not taste like an orange..

The service widget shows if a service is running or not running - not that said service is actually doing its function. Just that its on or off..

@chudak dude lets just agree that you don't grasp the concept of what the redmine is complaining about and why its not a bug and move on.. You just are not getting this..

Yes the service got added to the "SERVICE" widget.. its a service.. If you don't want to list it in the service widget then click the little wrench and uncheck it..

But just like every service that widget shows - just says the service is on or off, not that its performing its function or not.

I’m not sure why are you trying to proof that I “ don't grasp the concept”?

I always test myself and maybe I don’t get it, but probably 99% of regular users will not understand your concept. And I’m not say you don’t get it. Odd…

@chudak from this its is completely clear you not grasping it..

There is NO TS Widget... There is a SERVICE widget.. Yes the "SERVICE" widget shows the service is running - that is all it shows.. It does not show functionality of said service. Where you say that tailscale is not running is not correct either - that says its offline.. not that the service isn't running.

Which is exactly what was stated in the redmine you linked too.. It annoys you because clearly your misunderstanding the whole purpose of the service widget function. Which I have been trying to explain - but your justt not getting it.

                              Hey @johnpoz

I like you, but stop attacking me personally trying to challenge my intelligence!

I gave you several examples which any reasonable person, developer or tester would understand have demonstrated at lease some inconsistencies in the way things are labelled and or show information in psF

You responded to none of my questions, except saying that I don’t get it.

                              You obviously disagree.
                              And that’s fine.

It has been explained to death, there is no dedicated TS widget. There's only a services widget that only shows installed service and their status (runnig or not running).
Even I can understand this and I'm just a normal user.
