SG-5100 - Won't Boot
-
So, it's finally happened. I went to reboot my SG-5100 today to apply some patches, and it's DOA. All I get is a red LED on the power button on the rear that does nothing when pressed.
No lights, connected to a serial cable to see if anything happens, nada, not a single sign of life.
A while back I found that my eMMC was at 100% - 110% of it's lifespan and immediately installed an SSD. This has been working since, but I fear that now my eMMC is dead causing the device to not boot.
My question... If I take a heat gun to the eMMC on the back of the board and remove it, assuming I don't screw that up, will it boot?!
Thanks!

If the eMMC dies you should still see some output from the BIOS as it tries to detect it.
Do you see nothing on the serial console at all? Even if you power cycle it whilst connecetd?

@stephenw10 Correct, the power LED won't even turn green... Was 100% working, pushed a reboot from the GUI, it appeared to be locked up after that (No internet, not responsive, but looked ok based on the lights). Hard powered it down. Now I'm in this state.

Update...
Looking at this Reddit post:
https://old.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/15rsfz2/sg5100_cold_boot_issue/It's a VERY similar issue to the one I'm facing. He mentioned that depressing the reset button while powering on had unreliable results, I'd already tried this as well, but this post had me go back again.
After a couple of tries, while depressing the reset button, when I plugged power into the device, the power button immediately flipped over to green and booted 100% normally. No factory reset occurred.
I'll be putting it back into operation on my network tomorrow since I tore it down and flipped back over to a backup solution while I sort this out.
Very odd behavior however, and doesn't seem to be specific to just my device.

Hmm, interesting. Be sure to check the ware level again. That's not a set of symptoms I've seen but it does look like a failure mode that could also be the eMMC.
