Issues on re-install of system
-
Hi, i am having an issue getting pfsense to install. I had it successfully running on a dell optiplex 9020 in an active/standby cluster. Both systems have dual 256gb SSD's in them running zfs. Due to bad luck on my side, I had both SSD's fail around the same time on the primary system. The secondary system is working without issue right now.
I replaced the SSD's in the machine and am trying to reinstall pfsense again. When i run the install, i get to the part to select the storage configuration. If i pick zfs or udi, i get an error saying no disk. I can go to recovery mode from the installer and if i run gpart i see device ada0 and ada1. I was able to zero write to both SSD's without issue (used this command: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/adaX bs=1M). i don't know why the pfsense installer can't see the drives but the OS can without issues. using a usb drive that was created from this file: netgate-installer-amd64.img.gz
FWIW, on the other 2 optiplex systems that are still running, both zfs pool names are zpool so i am guessing all 3 were setup around 2.4 or so.

@ws6 What version of pfSense are you trying to install, 2.7.2 CE or pfSense Plus?
Maybe you want to give a go with the legacy installer? Just to make sure it's not an new-installer limitation/bug.

Thanks for that link. Using the legacy installer it worked fine. Not sure why the netgate wouldn't. It is using the onboard intel chipset for storage. I did even try to enable the CE repo on the netgate installer with no luck.
With the legacy installer, i was able to install it, update it to match the HA peer, and then sync all the settings over HA to the unit. FW is back up and active again.

Forgot to answer your first question. I am running Plus but i just needed anything to install. Tried to get either to install the netgate installer. I assume this is a new installer bug. Got 2.7 installed using the legacy installer and it was able to update to 24.03 without issue.
I would suggest that someone put a link to the legacy installers on the pfsense download page. I couldn't find a link to them when i was looking.

@ws6 maybe @stephenw10 has a better idea if there are still limitations of the new Netgate installer.
Regarding the link to the legacy installer, I guess Netgate would rather people use the new one.
For me the new installer is not a good fit, with the legacy one the installation takes a few minutes max, with the new one it takes forever with a crappy internet connection, over and over again :/

The installer is built on a newer FreeBSD version. So it implies that something in your hardware is not supported/recognised there. Probably the drive controller somehow.
Check the boot logs from the legacy and net installers for errors or omissions.
If there's a regression there it would be good to know about it now because that system probably won't boot in 24.03, 24.11 or 2.8.
