SG-1100 - Prolific 2303 not visible
-
Purchased an SG-1100 off Facebook Marketplace (S/N NTG2137000351) 11 days ago. Purchased power adapter off Netgate Store last week / arrived yesterday.
Do not have existing password. Seller has not responded w/ existing password. Default password does not work on Web GUI.
Tried using multiple USB A-to-micro cables with / ports on my Linux laptop / unable to see /dev/ttyUSB0, even when SG-1100 is powered on.
Tried using multiple USB ports on my Win10 laptop / connecting device shows no change in Device Manager, even when SG-1100 is powered on. Tried installing PL2303 drivers on Win10 laptop / no change.
This has been a waste of time and money. I'm about to assemble a spare PC for pfSense instead.

Make sure to follow the guide here:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/connect-to-console.htmlIf that's not working, try a different cable and make sure you connect the USB drive to the white USB port. TAC may be of further help if needed.

@marcosm I followed that guide earlier today / no joy.
I tried two different cables on my Linux laptop and a third cable on my Win10 laptop. Neither laptop will recognize the SG-1100's onboard PL2303 as even an unidentified USB device.
Tried booting the SG-1100 from both USB ports / still could not get my Win10 laptop to show anything different on Device Manager.
I don't have a TAC support account, so it looks like I'll be assembling a potato to run pfSense when I get home and requesting a refund from the Facebook Marketplace seller.
Thanks for the response.

What LEDs do you see on the 1100 when it's powered?
Do you even see an error when you connect the USB console cable?

@stephenw10 Upon initial power-on I see the green circle and black diamond. The black diamond rapidly flashes for a few minutes then goes steady.

@stephenw10 I removed the top half of the case so I could get the micro USB cable all the way into the socket. Upon doing this my Win10 laptop complained of a USB power surge (laptop could not provide sufficient power), so I filed plastic away from the micro USB slot until the cable housing would fit into it such that the plug can be fully inserted into the socket:

I bought a powered USB 3.0 hub, connected the SG-1100 to it and tried again. This time it gives me nothing. No warnings. It's like the device doesn't even exist. I tried removing the SG-1100 from the powered hub and re-connecting it directly to the laptop. Same result: nothing.

Was the 1100 powered on at the time? Some of the very early ones had a back power issue where it tried to pull power from USB if it wasn't powered.
But those LEDs sound like it is booting to some extent. Do you see link LEDs on the ports if you connect to them?
-
@stephenw10 I do. I am able to get a network connection to the device and load the login page.
-
Ah, Ok so it's simply that you don't have the password. Hmm, really not much you can do on the 1100 without access to the console to reset it.
-
@stephenw10 What is necessary to repair the device...re-solder the micro USB port to the board?
-
Possibly, if it's actually physically broken.
