If I reboot or power on the device and the console cable isn't connected it halts the boot process. It gets past the post screen, but then halts at pfsense.

If I then connect the laptop, establish a putty session via COM port and press space bar, the boot process continues.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Hardware unit is a Sophos XG 135 Rev 3, I don't believe it's hardware as I have swapped the unit, done a re-install etc. Plus it gets past the POST and halts at pfsense.

Console connection is patched via a patch pannel, so not sure if this would have a bearing.

I have another Sophos XG 135 R3 unit and I've installed Sophos XG Home and Opnsense on it and I don't get the same behaviour. I also have a spare XG 230 R2 that has pfsense CE installed on it that I was going to test further.

      XG135 R3 has pfsense+ installed.

        Where exactly does it halt?

If you boot with the console already connected does it still halt in the same place?

What exactly do you mean by that?

If the console cable (RJ45 to USB) is connected it boots with no issue.

It seems to halt right at the beginning of the initial boot, I'll try and look at logs re boot / capture putty

          So connection wise.
Laptop >> USB to RJ45 console cable
RJ45 wall port to RJ45 patch pannel
RJ45 patch pannel to console port on box.

Ah, try booting without the cable connected at the firewall end. If you have a bunch of cable connected to it without anything terminating it you're probably picking up some stray signals which are seen as a key press. I assume it's stopping at the loader prompt?

yes I believe I believe it's stopping at the loader prompt.

I will test it further again with it unplugged, change of cable and so forth.

I have a couple of the RJ45 to USB cables including an office Cisco cable.
