Pluse version for lab?
-
Hi,
Plus version is free or after installation, I must subscribe TAC licensing?
Thanks. -
Currently it's only available with a subscription.
-
In your opinion, which would be the best choice, CE or OpenSense?
-
Lol
@WhoAmI68 you do realise Stephen W is a loyal Netgate employee who values his job?Do you really think it is fair to ask if a competitors product is better on a the companies public forum?

Well, really, why not?
I think there are a lot of people here who have used both or migrated. Anyway, I'm asking about CE, which hasn't been updated since December 2023. -

That is not entirely correct since there is a ton of patches that can be applied into it. Perhaps it could be a bit more automated and the patch plugin could be made default...

I would not recommend using CE for any new installations as Netgate does not want you to use it (because of the development model they have chosen).

?
Then why can I get it here : https://www.pfsense.org/download/
I can get the installer without using any credit card ...
The less known 'ftp ?' server with all the pfSense versions, 2.7.2, and earlier, is still up and available also.
Didn't saw a message that states : "here they are, but don't use them please" anywhere. -

Consider how Netgate Plus development does not benefit from CE user feedback. Contrast that to open source project which use the home users as beta tester for their paid subscribers (Proxmox, Opensense etc).
Now consider the cost of Netgate separately releasing and testing CE.
Netgate's chosen development model has real cost and no (ongoing) benefit of supporting CE (other than trying to maximise the conversion of CE users to plus users rather than loosing them OpenSense)

Not that you can't get the old version.
Much more interesting is to think about why you can't get 2.8 snapshots. To answer my own question
You can get old versions of CE and there is a promise of at some time releasing a later version because Netgate is trying to move users to Plus not chase them away. You can not get current versions of CE (2.8 snap shots for 18 months) because it is against Netgates financial model to have ongoing CE users.
So imo selecting a product which the supplier trying to EOL is a dubious decision for new installations. Each to their own though.
Btw, this thread is very similar to Questions about the future of pfsense 2.7 CE
