      Noob here!

I’m currently running pfSense 2.7.2 and want to do a clean installation of 2.8.0 then restore config from there.

      My plan is:

      1. Backup my entire 2.7.2 configuration.
      2. Wipe the drive and install pfSense 2.8.0 from scratch.
      3. As soon as 2.8.0 boots, restore the 2.7.2 backup.

Will this work? Or, are there compatibility issues between a 2.7.2 config and a fresh 2.8.0 install?

Any advice on gotchas or best practices would be appreciated.

      Packages I have installed:
      System_Patches, Suricata, pfBlockerNG-devel and Cron.

      Thanks!

Yes, that will work. You should always be able to import an older config into a newer pfSense version.

You can import the config during the install if you want to:

tried to upgrade my 2.7.2 to the new 2.8.0:

          1. Before, i backed up my configuration (always make a backup before)
          2. Confirm update / upgrade
          3. After rebooting, it was working, still showing version 2.7.2, but I think it was not the same version anymore, because i was unable to upgrade any packages, showing version mismatch.
          4. Downloaded fresh new instalation 2.8.0 and installed using a pendrive
          5. Installed and configured the interfaces.
          6. Recovered the configuration file. (from web interface)
          7. waited to reinstall all packages
          8. everything working fine, new version 2.8.0
