Perform inplace upgrade from pfSense CE 2.7.4 to 2.8.0. pfsense did not come up after reboot to complete the upgrade.

After waiting a few countdown cycles, hooked up a monitor to the machine.
The upgrade process was stuck on "could not load firmware iwm9000fw".

Found this discussion. As its running on Lenovo m920q, I decided to disable the wifi in the BIOS for a quick fix.

Does anyone know if iwm9000fw driver was deprecated in FreeBSD?

Seems to be stil there: FreeBSD Manual Pages: iwm.

@stephenw10 mentioned in another post: "...The kernel panic you see is from a bug in the upstream firmware API. A real solution to that is in progress."

The firmware is not included. The bug is that when it fails to load the firmware it panics and should not. It should just fails to attach and continue to boot.

I recently posted a similar thread ("Error using the Netgate installer on a new install on an HP t740 thin client PC [Solved - Intel WLAN]") in this subforum. I'm not using a Lenovo device but HP, but the kernel panic is still caused by the same Intel WLAN cards.

It may be safer and saner to just physically remove the wireless card from the device, assuming you don't have a plan to use it on that device. It worked for me.

@Finger79 I reinstall from scratch using 2.8 after disabling WIFI in the BIOS. Hopefully the bug is fixed in the near future.
