nordvpn

I have a netgate 4100 running nordvpn. My normal bandwidth is 400mb. If i connect to nordvpn my bandwidth drops to 50mb. Do you think this is a nordvpn problem or a cpu limit on the 4100 router?
Thanks,

You bought a 4100, so you could 'trust' what the creators (Netgate) indicated as a "VPN" performance.
IPSec performance is shown here.
Let's presume IPsec is faster then 'OpenVPN'. So, not 950 Mbits/sec but half of that ?I measured with my 4100, over a 1 GBits/sec connection, to my own dedicated data center based server 330 Mbits /sec. Not 50.
Netgate knows that you could place a first (for example) 4100 on the WAN site of a second 4100, so they are interconnected with a 1 Gbit / sec Ethernet cable.
Run on the upstream 4100 the pfSense build in OpenVPN server, and on the downstream 4100 the OpenVPN client. Now, you do the test. Now, you've excluded all external factors (get a good cable).
I guess, you already understand where this is going ...If you don't have a second 4100, no problem ! You you have a ... PC with a 1 Gb NIC (no wifi) ?
You can do the same test. What's you've discovered is that a VPN ISP over sell its bandwidth. For example, on a 1 Gbits /sec server, they 'sell' 20+ clients. Like our normal land line ISP's. After all, their clients aren't always using their services, right ?
This is also possible : All US clients, by chance, start to use this New York based VPN server. Thousands of clients on one server. What will happen ?? ;)Btw : I'm pointing my finger to Nord, but it's very possible that your land line ISP filters (throttles) VPN type connections.
After all, if you were an ISP, what would you do ? ^^ -
@Gertjan Thanks for the posting. It was very informative, and I agree with you.
Again,
Thanks for your expertise.

There may be some optimising you can do. I'd expect to see far more than 50Mbps given no other restrictions.
Try testing from a client device behind the 4100 directly. Does that give you more bandwidth to the same server?

Yeah can confirm, NordVPN speeds aren't quite what they used to be.... Still they seem better than most others. I hear ExressVPN may have slightly better speeds recently, but NordVPN is unmatched on getting good streaming IPs that aren't blocked.
