APU2 with MC7455 SSD and WIFI
-
Hi All, this is my first post but have been reading here for a year. Thanks to all the folks that help in this forum.
Here's my hardware list.- APU2C4 with 4.11 firmware
- Pfsense 2.4
- Kingston 60GB SSD mPCIe
- Atheros AR5B22 mPCIe WIFI
- Sierra Wireless MC7455 mPCIe newest ATT firmware on ATT broadband APN
I have all the above working well with the exception of the SW MC7455, the device is working but is not very fast 3 mbps down 300k up. The MoFi gets 8-10 down and 3-4 up.
the MC7455 is connected to a external antenna that I used for a MoFi modem with a MC7455 in it as well and it was getting -80 dBm received signal strength.
I've read and read trying to figure out the best mode to use (QMI or MBIM) and how to change the bands within the pfsense cli. I know the MoFi was on band 12 to get the -80.
I can't connect to the AT port with cu -l /dev/cuaU.02 as it says all ports are busy. I installed the cell modem pkg and it detects the modem but it shows the status up green arrow and says no service and one bar in the signal.I'm new to all this, the reason I started this project is I moved to a rural area and this is my only option for internet access other than Satellite internet which is crazy money.
Thanks

Hi All, this is my first post but have been reading here for a year. Thanks to all the folks that help in this forum.
Welcome, you may have to find out what "mode" your ISP is allowing, needing or plain using! And then you have to
put the modem in the right mode for that network! Otherwise it would not really running fine or acting without issues. Here's my hardware list.
- APU2C4 with 4.11 firmware
Are you really sure that it is version 4.11?
- Pfsense 2.4
Why not gie 2.4.1 a try? A fresh an full install should be more then fine for all things, and together
with a config back up it is running fine in under ~30 minutes for you.- Kingston 60GB SSD mPCIe
Nice and enough for many things and packets as well.
- Atheros AR5B22 mPCIe WIFI
Not bad, not bad!
- Sierra Wireless MC7455 mPCIe newest ATT firmware on ATT broadband APN
There are three different firmware versions out for that modem! And it can also act in three different
modes! (Control commands and modes: AT-commands, QMI SDK, MBIM)I have all the above working well with the exception of the SW MC7455, the device is working but is not very fast 3 mbps down 300k up. The MoFi gets 8-10 down and 3-4 up.
Perhaps you were not using the right mode or the right AT commands to get it working proper.
the MC7455 is connected to a external antenna that I used for a MoFi modem with a MC7455 in it as well and it was getting -80 dBm received signal strength.
What is a MoFi modem? Which antenna is it really? (Vendor, model and model number) you should provide us
with more or detailed information to get a better help.I've read and read trying to figure out the best mode to use (QMI or MBIM) and how to change the bands within the pfsense cli. I know the MoFi was on band 12 to get the -80.
That is not really true! The best mode is the mode that your mobile ISP is supporting or prescribing for the usage.
I can't connect to the AT port with cu -l /dev/cuaU.02 as it says all ports are busy. I installed the cell modem pkg and it detects the modem but it shows the status up green arrow and says no service and one bar in the signal.
Often it may helps to pull the modem out, and then you will be putting it inside of a Windows based PC and then you
will be mostly able to change all given points more fast then under pfSense or FreeBSD which pfSense is based on.Then you only have to put it back into the pfSense box and all is fine working and/or able to configure.
I'm new to all this, the reason I started this project is I moved to a rural area and this is my only option for internet access other than Satellite internet which is crazy money.
Ok but it should be also given that the modem is supported or is able to get AT-commands to work proper out of the box.
Did you see and know this:

Thanks for the reply,
I have spent a week trying to get the APU2C4 working with the MC7455 and no luck yet. I have tried both MBIM and QMI on both AT&T and T-mobile.
I can get the modem /dev/cdc-wdm0 or 1 to be recognized and also send AT commands. The modem is in the middle mPCIe slot because thats the one that the SIM is connected to. I take the modem out and use this info to switch modes and the MC7455 will connect when in the linux laptop.https://zukota.com/sierra-wireless-em7455-how-to-enable-com-ports/
Here's the Mofi modem I referred too that I have.
http://mofinetwork.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=189
The Mofi has the exact same MC7455 mPCIe modem in it as I have in the APU2C4.
The antenna I use is here
https://3gstore.com/product/3047_3g4g-full-band-outdoor-omni-antenna.html
with type N connectors and 25 feet of LMR 400 cable on the primary antenna port and a small 4g antenna on the secondary antenna port.

Something does not sound right if you have no cuaU0.x ports. I use the MC7354 in an APU3. You will need to use MBIM.
I use B2 with ATT. B12 should be newer TMobile towers.usbconfig ugen1.3: <sierra wireless,="" incorporated="" mc7354="">at usbus1, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=ON (500mA) root@APU3:~ # cu -l /dev/cuaU0.2 Connected at OK atz OK ati Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless, Incorporated Model: MC7354 Revision: SWI9X15C_05.05.16.02 r21040 carmd-fwbuild1 2014/03/17 23:49:48 MEID: 359225050xxxxx ESN: 12801654587, 80193F3B IMEI: 359225050xxxxxx IMEI SV: 11 FSN: J8511200850410 +GCAP: +CGSM OK at!gstatus? !GSTATUS: Current Time: 28978 Temperature: 32 Bootup Time: 0 Mode: ONLINE System mode: LTE PS state: Attached LTE band: B2 LTE bw: 15 MHz LTE Rx chan: 925 LTE Tx chan: 18925 EMM state: Registered Normal Service RRC state: RRC Idle IMS reg state: No Srv RSSI (dBm): -80 Tx Power: 0 RSRP (dBm): -110 TAC: 5403 (21507) RSRQ (dB): -11 Cell ID: 00B11307 (11604743) SINR (dB): 2.2 OK</sierra>

Can you post the following from console command prompt:
usbconfig (find ugen for the modem then do a dump_device_desc for the VID and PID)
