Cannot install 64 bit - cpu long not supported
-
Dear Sirs,
I'm running pfsense 2.3.4, it doesn't propose the upgrade, so I've downloaded it and burned on CD.But during install it says cpu long not supported.
# dmesg | grep -i cpu
CPU: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D2700 @ 2.13GHz (2128.28-MHz 686-class CPU)
FreeBSD/SMP: Multiprocessor System Detected: 4 CPUsThe intel datasheet says 64-bit is supported. Where is the problem?

Not all Atom motherboards fully support 64bit. It depends on your motherboard, BIOS and CPU. Your output shows only a 686 compatible CPU rather than x86_64 so seems you're a bit stuck and likely your board/BIOS limiting you. Try updating the BIOS if possible or possibly forcing PAE on bootup, but if those aren't possible then you may need to replace the whole board with one which fully supports 64bit.

If this installation is a real 32Bit it is not able to upgrade to 64Bit and must be reinstalled and the pfSense dashboard
is also not showing the newer version! But during install it says cpu long not supported.
As sated by Supay you need a BIOS update or a new board, that is it.
Or you may want to use the version 2.3.5 for ~12 month and change then the hardware against a real 64Bit one. -
I know boards like this. I have one. The onboard chip graphics has a broken implementation for 64bit OS. Will crash every time try to do a VGA install.
Now, I have no idea if it will boot with a serial install or not. Silly me, I never tried it.

Go with version 2.3.5 it is maintained for ~12 month as I am informed right. And then you could change if you want
to a newer hardware platform, but you can also try out to disable the graphic unit inside of the mainboard and then
try installing the serial only version and not the VGA version. Could be running nice, but then a serial console cable
or USB to serial adapter will be a nice to have thing if you must connect through it.
