Recommendations for upgrading my Protectli Vault FW4B to handle 2Gb
-
Hi, my Protectli Vault FW4B served well for several years now but I want to upgrade to a 2Gb internet connection and the FW4B won't handle it. The FW4C has 2.5Gb ports but I've heard it may not reliably handle a 2Gb connection. The VP4670 has 2Gb ports but a higher processor speed. And then there's the VP6650 that has 10Gb ports. I didn't want to spend $900 on the hardware if I can help it. Any recommendations for hardware that will reliably handle a 2Gb connection? It doesn't have to be Protectli but my current box has been running flawlessly nonstop for the last four years.

What CPUs are those using? 2Gbps is relatively easy with recent CPUs unless you have some other restriction like power consumption or must be silent etc.

@stephenw10 It has an Intel Quad Core Celeron J3160 with 8GB DDR3L RAM. I just upgraded my Internet and the FW4B isn't able to handle it.

Is it a PPPoE connection?
What throughput do you see using the existing device?
The J3160 is a low power laptop CPU. It work great in something passively cooled. But it's trivial to find something with at least double the processing power. The C3558 we use in the 6100 for example.

Are you open to a little DIY? If so, read on.
Get a Lenovo Tiny M720q / M920q / M920x off eBay. Those models have a full-size PCIe slot. Find a riser/baffle combo, also on eBay. Finally, get a mainstream 2.5-gig NIC. My personal favorite is IOcrest SY-PEX24086:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLX9SC9D
It's an Intel i225 card, but it has an onboard fan, which allows it to manage its own thermals, and that may be important inside the Tiny's case.

The nice thing about it is, there are a lot of processor options, from a G-series Celeron to an i9, so if you don't like the processor you got with the device, you can upgrade or downgrade.
I built one of these to order last year to handle 2.5-gig Wireguard...

@stephenw10 I'm getting just shy of 1Gb. But then the NIC spec in it is 1Gb so that's not too surprising.

Have you seen the Protectli performance comparison?
Looks like the FW4C will achieve 2300 Mps unencrypted. The nice part is you can use the same RAM and SSD from the FW4B. You can sometimes find them on evilBay for $100
If you need encrypted VPN performance perhaps the VP2430
What ever you choose, do not use any built in eMMC if it has it.

@NC1 No problem with the DIY and I do like the ability to upgrade if needed. Thanks for the info!
