It seems you are defending Netgate or just hurt feelings.
There are millions of posts all over the Internet regarding this particular subject and they are all pointing to business points of view.For what I am guessing, it is going to happen just like it happened to CentOS, MySQL, OpneSuSe and other opensource applications.
Since you neglected to point any of the posts, can you point some of the posts?

I absolutely wont pay. But i also wont start a thread and whine because they switched to payment only model. I will just quietly move to something else. Simple as that. No need to be drama queen and seek attention on vendor forums. It wont change anything, so stop it.

error because the old config.xml file was not comparable with the new 2.8.x series.
Config files can be restored to a later version of pfSense/config file version.

Since you said limited, I say extremely! Therefore allow me to educate your ignorance. There is a difference between whining and asking for clarification.

It is very obvious you don't read much, then education is coming your way. All the applications mentioned before are dead due to lack of creativity and the teams that used to support those platforms abandoned those project making them nothing more than a test ground.
And yes, the idea was for a professional or some kind of reliable channel to provide answer, instead of disdainful individual, since pfsense CE has not specific path contrary to pfsense plus.

Ok locking this, nothing useful happening here.
For clarification there is no 2.8.1 ISO/Memstick image available and it's unlikely there will be. But that doesn't mean the situation won't ever change for future releases.
