Host overrides in DNS Resolver
-
Hi, I have read much things here but cannot sort out my issue, if I even have one??
I'm hosting Emby through the HAProxy server and it works great. But to save on internet usage I added a host override in the DNS resolver so that local traffic didn't go out over the internet. Maybe it shouldn't anyway as I assume a router is smart enough to achieve that?
I had set these up, as before I got fibre, I was using Starlink (No accessible IP address) and I was using a remote Virtual Private server to do my reverse proxying (using tailscale - a SpaceInvader One Youtube follow)
Now that I have a static IP address, I left those redirects in there in the hope that a family member using emby on their phone would be redirected to the local IP of the Unraid server rather than going out over the internet.
If I connect to emby.AAAAA.com it appears that there is traffic on both the wan and the lan ports, but if I connect to the local address there is no WAN usage.
The host overide I set up, well I did one for Jellyfin and Jellyseerr as well, but I'll ignore those was
Host emby
Domain AAAAA.com
IP Unraid server local address 192.168.0.10Also, I was using a separate pihole for ad blocking - adding the same lists to pfblocker was crippling my pfsense! But I took that out of the loop with no change to the graphs.
Should that work? Is the "traffic" I am seeing out and into the wan just going through the PFSense box, but not over the internet? It does not look like that is the case for the graphs. If I connect directly to the local IP address there is little to no WAN activity.
This isn't an issue with the firesticks which stay here, cos I can just set the local IP, but I have 3 kids that bring theirs from college to home and changing Emby settings on phones would also be a pain.
I'm not even sure I have an issue, maybe PFsense could sort all that out without an override, seeing as the server is now local rather than on a VPS?? Maybe, even my host overrides are now the problem, if the server is within the WAN network??
I am very confused, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am too, reading your post. It seems you are asking the most basic things, at the same time you do reverse proxy on a vps...
IPs go, where they have to go. Check on your hosts what IPs they get from their DNS. The only thing to avoid is using your WAN-address for local hosts. -

It is, yes.
the server is now local … the server is within the WAN network
? Is the WAN IP public or private?

@SteveITS Sorry, I mean it is on the LAN network.
I'll delete the host overides and see what happens. Perhaps they are now not required.

No need to be unsure. Fact check.
Question : what are the host names the my pfSense can resolve for me (knows about) ? :
Answer :
and hit Execute.
