      Hi all,

I am trying to upgrade 2.7.2 to 2.8.1.

Consistently on multiple different kvm's after downloading packages and reboot, upgrade process is timing out at :
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufsid/60c8aa545bb2e563 [rw,noatime]...

If at this moment I do restart and during boot select old kernel (from 2.7.2) upgrade will continue and succeed.

After successful upgrade, I can revert it to new kernel and then its fine.

Any idea why would it fail to mount disk for the first time would be much appreciated.
      Tnx

        Same hypervisors on each?

It could just be failing to show more on the console. That point is where the output switches to the primary console only.

@stephenw10 I'm having a similar problem, NOT using a *vm.

I tried to just post in this area, but I was being forced to use "reply".

I get "Mounting from zfs:pfSense/ROOT/default failed with error 6. (I have a picture of this, but I can't get my email on my phone to send the picture to my laptop where I am writing this).

I have used a DVD with pfSense+ that reverts to CE, and I've tried the 2.8.0 and 2.8.1 options.

So, with a working 2.7.1 from that DVD, I configured it and made sure I did not have any packages installed. Then told the running system to do the upgrade to 2.8.1 (to pull from the Netgate servers) and get the above failure.

Not in a rush, this was my backup system that I am pushing (well, trying) to be the Primary firewall/gateway system making the currently running system my back up (should I need such). Just trying to figure out what is wrong and what is the command I need to use (if any).

So installing 2.8.0 or 2.8.1 from the net installer fails in the same way? 2.7.2 installs but then fails the same at upgrade?

            What are you installing to?

@stephenw10 I hope I am answering with what you need:

I am installing on a fairly new tower with an ASUS Mobo:

              UEFI PRIME B550M

              5600x 6 core AMD Ryzen 5 @ 3700MHz
              w/ 16384 MB (2) 256GB SSDs.

I have had it running 2.7.1 just fine (have an ISO for that).

I have installed using a pfSense+ DVD that "fails" (I don't have a "key" for it) and I have my choice then of installing 2.7.1, or 2.8.0 or 2.8.1. Meanwhile 2.7.2 runs just fine for a smoke test. But once it pulls in the update from the servers, for 2.8.x and applies it, the subsequent boot of the "update" fails.

Hmm, are there any other errors during the boot?

Does it eventually fail to the 'mountroot>' prompt? If so what does it show there if you enter ? at the prompt?

@stephenw10 Yes, same hypervisor on each.

These are long time working 2.7.2 VM instances, GUI/CLI upgrade to latest version (2.8.1)

I am adding console output :

It looks like you're connected to the serial console there but the video console is primary? It's probably throwing some error at the video console that you can't see. That should show you why it's not booting.

@stephenw10 I actually had to put a video card in this system as it didn't have any native video. The video card only supplies HDMI, so I have an HDMI-VGA adapter to drive my normal monitor for testing. I do appreciate your input and your time. If all else fails I'll just go back to 271/2.
