File System Full for Ebedded update

I am guessing this is more of a generic Embedded device problem, but I just tried to do an upgrade from a recently set up device through the ssh console update and I am getting the error
/: write failed, filesystem is full
not sure if someone has pointed this out before. Guess I will have to set up everything from scratch. Is there a reason why the images are so small for the embedded device? I am pretty sure it would be very difficult to find a CF card that is under 1 Gb today.

I dont belive upgrading embedded firmware is possible.

Yeah - all the time i tried this the last years, it doesnt work … you have to reflash!
Thats also the reason why we changed our former pfsense boxes not located hat company headquarters back to m0n0 again ... but at the company pfsense makes a god job there furthermore (and i have physical access to reflash - which i'll not have at remote locations).

Seems like all they need to do to fix this problem is make the CF image larger so there will be more room for upgrading and logs.

You can resize the image, that helps slightly. The auto-update still downloads the images to /tmp, which is a memory disk, so that fails. My tests with updating a resized 1.2.2 have resulted in an unbootable system. Changing the platform, updating, then changing back seems to work, but I have not tested the upgraded system extensively.

Another issue is also, if you reflash and backup the config, you'll loose all your stats, graphs etc. I hope there is a solution for this in future … may be the way with the bigger embedded images could be the right direction!?

isnt it simple enough to edit /etc/platform and just add "pfsense" to convert it to full version and "embedded" to back again to embedded version

Backing up config, does just that, if you need to back up your rrd graphs, there is a post on how to do this if you search, I think its a case of tar'ing /var/rrd or something like this and scp out of old box and in to new box, then just untar to same directory….I think.

Why would that fix the issue of the Image running out of room? It would just be a full version of pfsense with a small partition
