Low power firewall specification help
-
Hi,
I'm looking at a low power usage firewall setup (so nothing like a P4) that will handle about 40mbit/sec both ways. I don't need VPN/IPsec or suchlike - just simple port blocking.
Thing is latency is very important (so I would like to stick with Intel or 3Com network cards) which is why I'm not too keen on Sokeris. I don't mind building the machine but I thought I'd get some advice from you guys with regards to processing power that doesn't eat up the current either.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you seen that suggestion: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=577.0
Doesn't have 3com or Intel nics but I doubt that you'll notice that if you only need 40 mbit/s full duplex. The Soekris or Wraps go up to 32 mbit/s in one direction which is too weak for what you are looking for. -
Thanks for the reply. I checked out that thread a day or so ago - it's a neat piece of kit indeed, plus priced very nicely. The problem is it has Realtek NICs and I keep on reading in this forum that they aren't very good for latency.
The thing is I've been asked to do security upgrades for this game server company who don't have a clue what they are doing but they don't want latency increase to be as low as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,

With "only" 40 mbit/s you won't push this device that hard that you'll notice a difference I think. Realteks put more load on the CPU than Intels but that shouldn't be noticable in your scenario and your bandwidth. You even should be able to go 100 mbit/s with this device (at least between 2 interfaces). I get full wirespeed with my C3 1 GHz with 2 Via Rhine nics.
