I just decided to switch from IpCOP to pfSense. I have two NICs on the pfSense box.

RCN Cable Modem <-> pfSense <-> LAN

My LAN is working fine. But I cannot get a WAN IP address. I have changed NICs. Here is what the log says

Nov 8 06:45:04 php: : Informational: DHClient spawned /etc/rc.newwanip and the new ip is wan - 0.0.0.0.

I plug the modem to my SMC router and it works fine. I installed ipCOP on the same machine and that works fine too. I want to use pfSense. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

DHCP and cablemodems can be a bit tricky sometimes. I never had cable myself and it's not very popular here in germany but I already have often heard at IRC ##pfsense that powering down the cablemodem for several minutes can solve the issue. Give it a try.

        plug in the smc
        go in its setup
look up the macadress off the smc on its wan site
        write it down
        now hook up pfsense
go in to het gui of pfsense and go to the wan interface
put the macadress of the smc on the wanport

I left the Motorola SB5100 modem unplugged for 10-15 mins and tried again. Same message. It does not get an IP address.

I tried going to the modem page by going to 192.168.100.1 and copied the mac address down. I put than on pfSense and still the same issue. I don't get any IP address.

I have noticed in the past that when I plug the SMC router into the modem, I initially get ip 192.168.100.10. Then when I release and renew, the modem learns my routers mac address and assigns me the real IP. If I clone the modems mac on the SMC router then I get the real IP without getting the 192.168.10.1 address first.

Is there any one using pfSense with RCN Cable Internet?
