Squid & Samba on pfSense
-
Hi
Is it possible to have Squid and Samba running on a pfSense system?
Sorry if my question seems lame, but im quiet new in this world.. om usually windows minded..

Possible? Technically yes. Does it make sense? It depends on the users needs and/or demand on security. Squid is there as installable package already, samba not. However as pfSense runs on freebsd you could add and configure it manually. However this is not officially supported.

Why would it not make sense installing squid?
I understand that sambe isnt supportet officially, anyway if it is possible to install it would be great.
Actually it would be great if it also could run apache…

I was rather referring to samba than to squid.

Seperation of duties. Running a proxy on a dedicated bastion host can sometimes be a smarter idea. But of course I'm talking about enterprises and you are likely talking about a home network.

Apache also is a FreeBSD package. In theory you could also install it. In reality, it'll conflict with lighttpd and cause you much pain and suffering.

Agree'd. It makes much more sense to run squid in a virtual machine even. The general rule of thumb with a firewall is to break up your services to as many hosts as possible.
But then again, we like breaking rules. The only thing I would suggest in regards to breaking rules (since it's free) is to install pfSense on as many boxes as possible and break up the duties.

I agree that breaking up the roles are the best way in corporate buisness, but in my "home" project (10 private users) it is essential to have an "all in one" box..
It would be nice if the box could have the folowing features:
pfSense as router/firewall (the great interface!!)
Filesharing with windows env.
webserver/sql server for simple hosting
FTP server for uploading/downloading files
Cache for caching internet traffic (line is traffic charged) -
The next major version (most likely 2.0) will offer freenas to be installed as package ( http://www.freenas.org ). Daniel already is working on that. This would cover all your needs I think. No timeframe for a release yet.

I am really looking forward to this package :)
