Hey, I'm new to pfSense (I've used M0n0wall a bit). I have a WRAP (233mhz, 128mb RAM, 2gb Microdrive, along with a Compex WLM54g Wireless Card). I'd like to give pfSense a try, and my equipment seems to meet the minimum system requirements. However, after reading the forums this may not be enough to adequately run my setup. My network has 6 desktops (generally connected 24x7) and 4 laptops (connected via wireless, not always all connected at the same time, generally 2 or 3 at any given time). They all connect to the internet via a 8mb cable connection and several of the computers will connect to p2p networks. Will my WRAP work sufficiently? or should I look into getting something else?

Guess it should be able to handle that load as you "only" have 8 mbit/s. I tested a wrap here at a 16 mbit/s adsl2+ and gave it a hard time (p2p, multiple ftp downloads, etc) and it didn't break though it was not able to deliver the full speed and the cpu was heavily loaded. Just give it a try and monitor cpu load at status>system. If you get the latest snapshot there are some rrd cpu graphs now too  ;)

I just read on your FAQ's that I can install pfSense on a Nortel Contivity 100. Would this make a better platform than the WRAP? It certainly seems to be a cheaper option (seeing I can buy one off of ebay for less than $50)

          Thanks,
          Jeff.

EDIT: Or possibly better yet, how about a Nokia IP440?

The Nortel Contivity 100 looks to be 300 mhz, atleast the one I looked at was. I'm running pfSense on a nokia ip330 166mhz box with a 5mb/2mb cable connection. I can push 10-15 MBps through this box, thats without traffic shaping.

If choosing between the Nortel Contivity 100 and IP440 I would go with the IP440. It has a 600mhz cpu and the ones selling on ebay now have 4 port nic cards in them. However it takes up rack space.

Otherwise the IP330, make sure you get a 266mhz or 400mhz box, is only 1u and easily to install pfSense on. Not sure about how hard it is to install on the Nortel Contivity 100.

I have a WRAP running 1.01 release here at work running on a 45meg link.  I can only get throughput of about  16mbit/s on it which is right in line with what Hoba is experiencing.  I have tried all the tweaks in the config (polling, etc etc) and 16meg/s is about the most I can get out of the WRAP box.  Polling made response time jump about 10x (~1ms to ~10ms) but I didnt really see any bandwidth improvement…
