'Terminated'
-
I did a quick search here for the term 'Terminated'.
I hope this is not a RTFM question but….I just tried pfsense, after running smoothwall for years. Your openvpn option has peaked my interest...
I am using the same pc as the smoothwall and running via liveCD. My connection to the web is via dsl modem in PPP half bridge mode.
The IP is being reset every 30 seconds which I thought might explain a performance issue and dropped web pages every so often...
However, I am also seeing 'Terminated' on the console page quite often.
I went and tried the Shell from the console and used the TOP command to see the load. It was somewhere around 1.xx for the most part.
Even in TOP, after a short time I see that 'Terminated' and then the shell prompt shows up.
SO, RTFM? or Hardware problem despite this box running smoothwall for years, or is this a PPP half bridge issue for pfsense?
Thanks for any thoughts...

pfSense requires 128 megabytes of ram. Terminated means the system is out of ram and it is killing processes.

Ok,
With 256megs I thought I would be ok.
Since I am running the liveCd 1.0.1 , is it possible that the logfile activity or something eles is filling up ram?The webgui shows 18% memory usage and 3% cpu at this moment.
Can you suggest if I should try moving this to a hard drive on this PII 266 or would I be better off finding a faster machine with the 256megs?
Thank you for your feedback!! Great product!!

It really needs only 128 megabytes of ram. I cannot think of a case where it would require more. We really ramped the needed amount up high.
Please try our latest testing snapshot which is based on FreeBSD 6.2

Does freebsd actually report 256 mb ram? There was a problem in another thread somewhere here at the forum where a broken bios caused wrong ram detection and freebsd was only seeing a part of the physically installed ram. I biosupdate fixed it for that person.

I dusted off a PIII 1 gig with 256meg.
I see these darn 'pauses' and timed out pages then good to go for a few minutes and then back to the same 'pauses' or worse.I had to turn off the default rule on the wan to get this to work on either pc. Probably related to how the PPP half bridge works…
And 'terminate' still shows up on the console every so often, but not as bad as on the slower pc.
Still investigating..
---- and I have to figure out how to use that snapshot.. Thought I would expand it to an iso image but it expanded to 600+ files in a directory structure.. off to read and figure out how to use it..---- thx
Yes, I will download that newer test version now and try it later tonight if time permits...
hopefully I don't have to reconfigure it........ -
the snapshots you download on to youre pc
then you go to the webgui
and go to the firmware page
press enable firmware upload
brows on youre pc to the snapshot you had downloaded
pfSense-Full-Update-1.0.1-SNAPSHOT-12-20-2006
then press upgrade firmware
waid until the upgrade is finists
now youre on the newesd version of pfsense -
Ok, thanks for the tip on how to use the snapshot. I assume I can't do the snapshot upgrade with a liveCD. Correct?
Tonight I downloaded a fresh install of smoothwall to make sure none of the mods I've done over the years made any difference. I loaded it on the newer box and it has ran for hours with none of the problems I am seeing with these other sw routers. weird weird weird. ???
I just don't understand what could be so different in the handling of ppp half bridging from my dsl router…
My next step tomorrow night will be to try pfsense on this box but this time I'll try installing it rather than running from LiveCD. Naturally that will probably allow me to utilize the snapshot. I will use another hd so I can swap back and forth.

You are asking why the handling of stuff is so different that it sounds like you think FreeBSD/pfSense is Linux. So it's time for the quite often session to steer you clear. No, pfSense/FreeBSD is not Linux. no, we never shared the same code for a base system. Yes BSD is older than Linux.
So please, stop asking why a BSD would handle packets differently than a Linux system. The stacks are COMPLETELY different and yes BSD has bee around longer.

bsd got manny of its roots from the first computer systems they runend a versions of unix
bsd stands for Berkeley Software Distribution it was a unix version distibuded in the 70's by the Universiteit of Californië - Berkeley -
For tonight's task: Does anyone have a moment to send me the best procedure to collect data regarding what is going on between the internet and my pfsense installation. Should I go after log files on the router or try to splice an etherreal box between the modem and pfsense or what does anyone suggest… up down up down up down......
======== Regarding sullrich's post above ====
OK OK (sullrich you are well within your rights to put that out there),I do know that pfSense, monowall along with freenas and others are indeed, FreeBSD rather than linux.
However, I will not pretend to know the difference (yet) other than knowing that there is a difference.Way back when I used a powerful (at the time) floppy based router (freesco) over dialup. Eventually I found IPcop and Smoothwall and settled there for years. Also, over several years at a small ISP we did much with Linux servers etc. I recall that FreeBSD was considered more secure than Linux but we never found any applications we needed that demanded we learn FreeBSD back then. I am not married to windows but know nothing of FreeBSD to speak of.
I reference smoothwall in my posts more out of a desire to say that I don't think the DSL modem is the problem because it is working well with smoothwall. There is no desire to advertise or push anyone towards another product if that is a concern. You've got a nice thing going here, I just want to be able to try and take advantage of it too!
I find myself here out of a desire to try to learn more. Practically, I see more features in pfSense which I would like to test and perhaps take advantage of. From seeing that I can get a USB ethernet adapter to function, to the traffic shaper. If I learn something of FreeBSD in the process, all the better…
As a sidebar I am having lockups with my drives on freenas in two difference systems. Yep, I have much to learn but we will keep this thread to trying to make my dsl router and pFsense form a meaningful relationship if you are all up to it.
Thank you
ps: I just googled 'linux vs FreeBSD' oh boy..... ::)

Hi,
Touching base… Running monowall latest beta...... LiveCD testing as not enough time to swap drives tonight.Downloading large iso file I see the same up/dn/up/dn problems as pfsense. Also the browsing experience is hit or miss with pages timing out or building smoothly on a seemingly random basis.
Since these distros are related, should I assume this is a freeBSD 'issue'?
I did some more google searches on BSD vs half bridge and that short search suggests I am not the first to encounter problems here.
I am more than willing to do what I can to dig into this from this end if anyone is interested in finding a fix.
Thx

Yeah must be a BSD issue.
