PPPoE WAN configuration Problems
-
First of all Hello to all as this is my first post in the forums. This is a brilliant Open Source projects one of my favorites after Media Portal :D. Anyway i hope this is the correct place to post my questions.
I recently Changed my ISP and the new one is using PPPoE Server. I configured my pfSense WAN interface to use PPPoE but i have two problems.
1) I am not able to reach my given upstream bandwidth. Actually is like all my upstream is blocked for some reason which I don’t know why. There is nothing wrong with the ISP as if I used a Linksys router it works fine and I get 50Kb/sec which is a normal speed for my broadband connection where as with pfSense i only get 1Kb/sec max.
2) Is there anyway that I can configure my pfSense box to get the DNS Servers from my ISP instead of putting them in manually in general setup?
My Setup is the following
I use pfSense Release 1.0.1 built on Sun Oct 29 01:07:16 UTC 2006 running on VMWare Workstation as a virtual machine. My previous setup was with a DHCP broadband ISP and i had no problems at all, but it seems now with the new broadband PPPoE ISP I have a problem. Thanks in advance for any replies.

1: VmWare might well be the problem…
have you tried running PfSense on a PC directly?2:
if you get an IP dynamically (DHCP) and your ISP provides DNS entries on his DHCP you can get them.
general setup --> "Allow DNS server list to be overridden by DHCP/PPP on WAN" -
thanks for the quick reply GruensFroeschli.

Can you explain why vmware might causing a problem with PPPoE setup and not with DHCP? I will configure a standalone box that i have here as a dedicated pfSense and test it in the mean time.

I do have that option enabled and my ISP provides me with DNS on his DHCP but still i dont get them from pfSense but i do from my Linksys router. I will re check those options again and test it on a standalone pc again.

ok using a dedicated pfSense box solve the upstream problem, although i dont understand why it dosen't work with vmware. Probably a bug or something.
still can get the ISP DNS Servers but that's ok i dont really care about it.

update youre pfsense to a newer version
manny things are fixed in the versions afther 29 oct -
1. i dont know why exactly it might not work with VmWare but i already had some problems with VmWare and Network and always solved them through putting the tests on a dedicated machine ^^"
2: do you mean your DHCP-clients behind PfSense should get the DNS entries?
the option in the post above only makes PfSense aware of the Servers.
If you want the Clients to have the entries too you have to change your DHCP-Server Config.
If there are no entries in the config, the DHCP-Server sends your Clients the IP of Pf itself and Pf acts as a DNS forwarder
