      _I am running a full pfSense installed on a CF card. To save the CF from an early death I have changed the contents of /etc/platform to 'embedded'.

      This gives me a dirty disk error at boot time but works ok. However when I want to upgrade I need to change the 'embedded' back to 'pfSense' otherwise the upgrade leaves me with  an unbootable machine that needs to be reinstalled.

      Anyone else get this? Anyway around this problem?

          I tried this again.

          upgraded firmware to latest update : pfSense-Full-Update-1.2-BETA-1.tgz (today)

          using edit.php change /etc/platform from 'pfSense' to 'embedded'
          using exec.php run /etc/rc.conf_mount_ro

          reboot

          then change firmware to an older update I have on my hardisk  ( pfSense-Full-Update-1.2-BETA-1.tgz.gz from -18 may 2007) and the firewall gives me a  '|' on the console during bootup and hangs…

          falcon,  do you do this some other way?

              I'm fairly sure that on reboot your filesystem would be back to read-write, I don't think that it would stay read-only.
